About Go Skate Day Hemming [SK8]Park: Skateboarding is always in a state of evolution, always drawing new inspiration from familiar places. Jacksonville has played a heavy hand in skate culture since the beginning and Hemming Plaza was a focal point of the controversial street skating subculture for generations upon generations of riders. Amidst an increasingly vibrant city, skateboarding has never slowed down, never been so diverse and never been as storied as it is today. The change in direction and name of Hemming Plaza to Hemming Park in 2014 is a hallmark of Jacksonville’s revitalization and growth in recent years. Coincidentally, the event formerly known as Go Skate Day Hemming Plaza has adapted its fourth consecutive year of programming to produce Go Skate Day Hemming [SK8]Park. The event aims to bring skaters and non-skaters together for a weekend-long celebration of skateboarding culture, fun and community. Unique to Jacksonville, hemming[SK8]park represents a progressive intersection of public space and skateboarding culture, seeking to pave the way for smoother rides and a healthier city.
About Go Skateboarding Day: Go Skateboarding Day was established in 2004 by the International Association of Skateboarding Companies. It celebrates the exhilaration, creativity and spirit of one of the most influential activities in the world. The Summer Solstice, June 21st, marks this annual homage to drop everything and go skateboarding.
About Kona Skatepark: Kona Skatepark is the oldest outdoor, privately owned skatepark in the United States, and possibly the world. Kona is a legendary skatepark, and should be on every skaters list of ‘parks to skate’!
