Tim Massett of Sun Ray Cinema has developed a brilliant new film series for the landmark movie theatre in Five Points: The Talkies. For each of these events he brings a film star or director in to discuss the movies they made or starred in with Jacksonville audiences. Already, he has brought in Crispin Glover, This weekend he brings one of America's quirkiest and interesting film makers, John Cameron Mitchell. Mitchell directed and starred in the cult classic "Hedwig and The Angry Inch" as well as the controversial "Short Bus". Join us after the jump for the details of this amazing event.

From the Sun Ray Cinema Website:

Actor and director John Cameron Mitchell will offer an intimate filmgoing experience at the Sun-Ray Cinema in 5 Points on March 2 and 3, 2012. The director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus, and most recently Rabbit Hole, (starring Nicole Kidman & Aaron Eckhart) has programmed a weekend full o' film that has inspired—and will complement the scheduled screenings of—his own work.

The unique opportunity begins on Friday with a screening of Mitchell's sweetly transgressive Shortbus, during which he and actors will provide a live commentary while the film rolls. The conversation will focus initially on the experiences our guests had making the film, but ultimately become a chance to communicate with the creator and actors in a free-form dialogue that goes one step further than a traditional question and answer session. This innovative approach to live commentary is the latest in The Talkies, a series that has previously featured directors such as John Waters, George Romero, and Guy Maddin.

Also on Friday, a screening of Mitchell's wildly successful musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch straight up, including on-screen sing-a-longs.

The next night John will join us again to present a double feature of classic films that he curated specifically for this weekend at Sun-Ray. He's cited Albert Brooks' Real Life, a lampoon of American Family, and Terrence Malicks' Badlands, starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek as especially influential on his development as a filmmaker. Mr. Mitchell will introduce these films and chat about them after the screenings.
