Pub Crawl! Riverside and Downtown Event Huge!August 1, 2011 10 comments Print Article
Sights and scenes from Metro Jacksonville's July 2011 Downtown Riverside Pub Crawl. The crawl was further proof that properly planned urban events have the ability to create crowds and synergy that help expose and breathe life back into the urban core. The Pub Crawl was sponsored by The Jacksonville Landing and connected the historic Riverside Neighborhood along King Street with the Nightclubs along Bay Street. Here are the images proving a picture is better than a thousand words.

8:20-9:00 Dive Bar

Pub Crawl Frequently Asked Questions:
What is this Pub Crawl all about? Its the most fun you will have outside of a Florida-Georgia game in downtown.
What does my ticket entitle me to? Two drink tickets, no cover charge at any participating bar on the crawl (at any time during the night), and complimentary trolley service between pubs. IN ADDITION, there will be free giveaways throughout the night and the opportunity to win great prizes during the Bold City Brewlympics at the Jacksonville Landing.
Will I be able to take home a pint glass from the Ritz? Nah brah, its time to stop hanging out with the same old people. Nightlife very much exists on the other side of the ditch. Besides, you already have a kitchen full of Ritz glasses :)
What if I just got my hair did, I dont want all this humidity to affect my hotness?! I know what you mean girlfriend, ok?!?! I dont want to see your hair get all frizzy either. Trolleys come equipped with ice cold AC. We are beautiful-people friendly and an equal-opportunity pub crawl.
I dont want to be driving around drinking, how am I going to get all the way downtown and back safe and sound? Drinking and driving makes us angry and its against the law. Mostly, its just a stupid and deadly thing to do. The Hyatt is offering all Pub Crawlers a fantastic deal to take the elevator home. Book a room at the Hyatt, mention the Metro Jacksonville Pub Crawl and you will get one nights accommodations for only $99 and in turn will receive a $50 gift certificate anywhere in the Jacksonville Landing. Keep the fun rolling all night and into the next day with this offer. If you have a designated driver in your group, please let us know at check-in and they will receive a wristband to ride the trolley and enter all of the pubs free of charge. Sorry, no free drink tickets for your DD. Were not that dumb ;)
What are the participating locations? Club TSI, Marks Lounge, Dive Bar, The Jacksonville Landing, Walkers, Rogue and the Loft are our participating locations. It's a great mix of venues. There will be something for everyone, and perhaps a whole lot more.
The Pub Crawl starts early. I gotta get my grub on. Whats up with that? Believe me, I never skip an opportunity to eat a good meal. The Jacksonville Landing will be offering Pub Crawlers a special menu from participating Landing restaurants so you can soak up your libations with a good square meal.
Will I get lucky? Thats not the kind of business were in homie. But, its very likely you were conceived on a night like this.
Where do I buy tickets? Ahhh, great question. Now youre talking the right language. Go to http://www.metrojacksonville.com/pubcrawl and youll find a paypal link to purchase tickets. I encourage you to buy your tickets early, as tickets on the day of the event will be more expensive.
Where do I join the Pub Crawl? Well have two spots to start the crawl. For our Riverside/Avondale friends, you can start the crawl at Walkers from 6:30 to 7:20PM. For our downtown and suburbanite friends, you can join at the Jacksonville Landing from 6:30 to 7:30PM. Keep checking http://www.metrojacksonville.com/pubcrawl for more details and a full schedule.
I heard downtown isnt safe and there is nowhere to park? Here's a little secret: Downtown is one of the safest neighborhoods in the city. Its not just for the homeless anymore. Plus, there are an ABUNDANCE of parking options. We suggest meter parking, which is free after 6PM. For most of you though, you can just park at the Hyatt. Youll be staying there anyway when you take advantage of their Stay N Play Metro Jacksonville Pub Crawl deal.
Is it true that Captain Zissou can't hold his liquor? No comment.
Pub Crawl An Example Of Tactical Urbanism In Action
Tactical urbanism is a movement focused on the small stuff. Whereas city planners and developers try to make sweeping, impactful changes through large-scale design and construction, tactical urbanism seeks to make changes one sidewalk, one street corner, one block at a time. And the results can be exciting, witty, successful and extremely affordable.
The Metro Jacksonville Downtown and Riverside Pub Crawl is a local example of tactical urbanism. Accepting that large-scale projects to stimulate vibrancy may take years to implement, the crawl is an instant solution to stimulating and exposing vibrant life in Jacksonville's urban core. Though temporary in nature, this event reflects what permanent, human-centered changes could look like with simple coordination and regularly scheduled events.
Tactical Urbanism has the five following characteristics:
1. A deliberate, phased approach to instigating change;
2. The offering of local solutions for local planning challenges;
3. Short-term commitment and realistic expectations;
4. Low-risks, with possibly a high reward; and
5. The development of social capital between citizens and the building of organizational capacity between public-private institutions, non-profits and their constituents.
