Skyway + Brooklyn + Fire Station 5 = URBAN DYNAMO

Metro Jacksonville’s Robert Mann has developed a potential solution for the preservation of Brooklyn’s Fire Station 5 and the Skyway’s overall image. Here is a look into what he believes can become an urban dynamo.

A JTA sponsored “rescue” would bring regional news media attention and cheers from the many Jacksonville citizens concerned with history. JTA becomes an instant hero agency by two simple actions, 1) move and preserve the old station with remodeling for retail and food services, and 2) add an attached complimentary Skyway station.

The fire station could be moved across the street and limited TOD development could begin allowing for another 'future' extension a bit deeper into Brooklyn to the lot on the SW corner of Forest and Riverside.

Finally, the driveways west of the station could become bus/streetcar-only territory that would allow Park Street transit vehicles to turn east on Edison and north on the May Street Stub into the station. As our illustrator so ably demonstrates, if the May Street Stub wasn't used by buses, it would make a dandy food truck park.

Meanwhile, the conservative-to-a-fault Jacksonville political machine has lined up solidly behind JTA and the expansion plan. Letters of support, including adding the expansion into the State and TPO plans, are in hand along with letters from the entire Duval Delegation. Creativity, however, is sorely lacking when such a golden opportunity as this has presented itself.

The most exciting part of this proposal is that it DOESN'T HAVE TO BE AT RIVERSIDE AND FOREST, what about RIVERSIDE AND LELIA, ANYONE? There is some flexibility of location built into this plan.  Mayor Brown? Nat Ford? You have my phone number, let's build a transit system.
