I really like the proposal.  That area is turning into one serious medical district.

Just imagine if the skyway would have connected it to the rest of downtown versus running east down Riverplace.

It would attract more riders.  Its one of the reasons we've lobbied for JTA's Southbank BRT plan to take another path, as opposed to paralleling the Skyway.  We're getting ready to spend millions more and we're not even hitting areas (like Baptist Medical) that could be better served.  Instead, we're duplicating the skyway with a system that will compete with it for riders.

Beautiful expansion. Whoever is in the planning department has done a lot of great work in developing and growing the hospital. Maybe they need an assistant?  Wink

I have! I didn't see a position like that in their job search website. I wish they had one!  Grin

New tower to serve Baptist, Wolfson

A new tower is coming to Jacksonville's skyline.  An 11-story building will house additions to Baptist Health's downtown hospital and Wolfson Children's Hospital. Both facilities are owned by Baptist Health and sit next to each other off Prudential Drive.

"If we had available land, we'd build two buildings," said Larry Freeman, Wolfson's administrator.

Instead, the two-in-one tower will rise on a spit of land wedged between the existing hospital complex and Interstate 95. The building, due for completion in early 2011, represents a major expansion of the city's only children's hospital and an upgrade of the downtown hospital, said Hugh Greene, Baptist Health's CEO and president.

Pretty sad that this gets high rise status in Jacksonville.  I will be a nice addition to the area.

Beggars can't be choosy.  Under normal circumstances, these guys would have purchased an old cow pasture and constructed a new low rise complex, surrounded by asphalt surface parking.

Exactly.  I love that Baptist is making the most of the land they have.

I've said it before, the skyway should have taken a right from the Acosta versus a left... better yet, a complete loop.

Re: Wolfson Children's Hospital Expands

You dont need highrises to have urban density and vibrancy.  Look at European cities which have few skyscrapers yet have densities and activity in their cores which we only dream of.  So, I think it is good that Baptist is making this commitment to expand downtown and to densify their operations.
