Cheryl Grymes Bio

Cheryl Grymes is already the leader of a nonprofit organization devoted to improving the Duval County public school system and now is pursuing the School Board District 1 seat.  Grymes has a decade-long record of improving corporate and community involvement in the school district, homing in on challenges like improved principal training, better outreach to parents, and more efficient central office operations. Her involvement in 16 different Duval County community groups includes several years with Big Brothers Big Sisters, where she is a top executive, serves as a mentor and helps improve mentoring for Duval County youth. Grymes is also the former leader of a countywide council of PTAS and was named “Mother of the Year” by one local organization. She has been endorsed by the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors.

Are you going to provide similar information abut the incumbent Ms. Barrett?  Other races?
Is MJ endorsing candidates?

I believe the plan is to run the bios and platform information of as many candidates as possible. Ideally, we'd like to encourage as many of our readers as possible to get out and vote this month. The health of our public school system is a situation that seriously needs to be addressed.

Metrojacksonville is a community discussion, and nothing is more important to the community than dialogue about our elected officials.

We will be running individual endorsements as called for and then a list of observations and suggestions.  I'm sure that our posters will have their own ideas and be able to make up their own minds and provide endorsements of their own along the way, as has been our custom since the first day!

Who are you for in this race, Charles?!

Hard to find the important information.
Are the candidates honest? What moral standards do they espouse? What kind of character, ethics and personal integrity do they hold? These be the keys to hiring any person given government enforced unfettered access to influence the minds and body's of our children.
Where do we find THIS information, because the rest is merely window dressing and fluff.
Until you privide the political party affiliation if any and the religious belief/background, you aint providing us much. Bad folk volunteer their time and serve on 'non-profit' committees too.

Stephen - I haven't made up my mind on this one - that's why I want to see similar info about Ms. Barrett.

I applaud MJ for doing this, and look forward to reading about other candidates.

Thanks Charles.  Hopefully Martha's people will respond to us and reach out! Its been very easy to get a response from Cheryl, and I think we are setting her up for a liveblog later on this week!

I guess since she isn't the incumbent she is willing to work harder and reach out to more people!

I will update you on all correspondence with Barrett's (the incumbent) people.

I don't know much about this race - but I attended elementary and middle school with Cheryl's daughter (and my sister, with another of her daughters), and I remember Cheryl always being deeply involved in the goings-on at Hendricks Ave. Elementary. And that would have been damn near 30 years ago. So for that reason alone she's got my vote.

I'd like to welcome our friend from the TU forum.  Thank you for joining us.

What do someone's religious beliefs and political affiliations have to do with making sure that our children receive a quality education?  Is it your assertion that somebody from a certain political party or religious organization would be able to make better decisions regarding public education (which is neutral in terms of religion)?

I know Cheryl and feel she is a viable candidate; but I am really put off by the "dirty politics" mailings to voters on her behalf.  The is not supposed to be a partisan race but the republicans made it so with a dishonest flyer about Martha Barrett, someone I also know and equally like.

Given that Cheryl allowed the republican party to send out a nasty mailing attack on her opponent, I have to vote for Barrett.

Cheryl already won the race, tayana.
