Explore and Enjoy Your Neighborhood at Park and King After 5 Street Festival

WHAT:
Metrojacksonville.com is pleased to announce a street festival celebrating the King Street District in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood. Park and King After 5 is a collaborative effort b/w Metrojacksonville.com and the Park and King Area Association. On Friday Sept. 30th from 5pm to 9pm, select merchants will be opening their doors late to showcase this revitalized commercial corridor. For $5, you can buy a commemorative mug either online at metrojacksonville.com/pubcrawl or on the day of the event. With your mug, you will be able to enjoy exclusive drink specials from any of the participating bars and restaurants. There will be activities for all ages including neighborhood art, a chalk art contest and cooking demonstrations.

I think especially in this economy King Street shows why the overly-restrictive non-organic / artificial mall space concept will die eventually, there are too many hurdles vs. organically grown business and entertainment areas. But as long as we've decided we're going to make a go of the Landing, it really does need its dedicated parking. It's a bird of a different feather.

September 19, 2011, 09:48:35 AMMost of the area residents will probably be walking/biking up there. So parking shouldn't be a huge issue. The only reason I've gotta bring my car is because I have to lug my armor bin with me (someone ordered Star Wars characters.

Will Pele's Fire bring their rolling Wood Fired Pizza Oven and set up? After all they are soon to be the marquis
player at that intersection.

If they can find a spot that complies with the restrictive transient vendor regulations, they are most certainly welcome. I think they are supposed to be at Green Room Brewing on the night of the 30th however.

The poster who claimed no free parking was flat out lying in order to make a cheap joke (that nobody got). As it says in the flyer, there is FREE parking at First Guaranty bank. The bank is right in the middle of the action so you won't have to walk more than 2 blocks to get to a bar from your car. For the breweries on the north end, we've got some pedicabs to help out with the trip.
This is truly a ground breaking event for Park and King

Who wants to paddle McCoys creek, Hogans, or under the Hyatt. See the promised 680' Downtown Public Pier. Fishweir Creek is silted in. Weather permitting. Field, your Making it Happen.

It is wonderful to see the transformation of Park & King.So cool,satisfying to know my City Council person is so connected tp P&K.
With so much Wonderful throughout Avondale and Five Points the draw to Park & King did not tug with compelling force however I have patronized Carmines twice inside seven days.Last Saturday after Hogans Creek Coastal Cleanup I was back for round two,this time by myself.Sat at the bar,wonderful plate,superb service,attentive owner,who had been up all night with artists creating murals,happy staff,great crowd....and the Beer on the wall.
Reminds me of New York City gems.
Eclectic- among the bumper stickers one that really hit home:Jesus Loves You.....Everyone Else Thinks You're An A.. Hole. Gulp.....
looking forward to this P&K event.

I absolutely agree NM! This is a great opportunity to celebrate the revitilization of this area. Jim has been fantastic in his leadership... both in making this revitilzation happen, and being a BIG help to all of us for making this street festival happen.

September 20, 2011, 03:00:32 PMFinehoe's tongue-in-cheek remark is well taken. The parking issue downtown is bogus. If anything there is too much parking. Walk a couple of blocks in any one direction and what percentage of the square footage is taken up by garages and parking lots? 50%? 40%?
Look around at the places people are eager to visit. New York, for example, has got to be the worst place in the United States to park a car. Does that stop it from having vital commercial centers (downtown, midtown, and uptown)?
The Landing is a disaster because it is poorly managed. They could build a 5,000-car garage next door and not a single additional client will enter the place.
If they were to raze the Landing and erect a riverfront streetscape with on-street parking (a kind of King Street on the water, but with a denser concentration of buildings), people might be actually want to go there. Maybe then they'll think of retail on the street fronts of those horrible parking garages.

We've worked pretty hard putting this together and would like to invite you all to come out for the Park and King After 5 festival. You pay $5 for a mug and you'll enjoy $2 drafts at participating merchants and merchants that aren't usually open late will be open for you to stop in and see what's been happening in this once blighted commercial corridor. There will also be other activitites as well.
If anyone has questions, comments or suggestions regarding Park and King After 5... please post them in this thread.

I have been to St. Patrick's Day in Savannah when it was at its raging peak of debauchery and I have been to a First Friday block party in Springfield where the children were as thick as the mosquitoes. Either way, the refreshments and the company were great. I just hope that folks don't go to Park and King with the assumption that it's something that it is not...

With your $5 mug, you can get any Bold City Beer for just $2!!!!! Other locations are also expanding the deal to more beers in order to compete. No matter what happens, the consumer wins!!! We are proud to say that the amount of deals available to mug-holders will greatly exceed what we initially imagined.
