Springfield's Main Street Cruise This Weekend

Tomorrow, thousands of people, some from as far as Central Florida, are expected to flock to Springfield to witness the historic district's second edition of the Main Street Cruise.

The Main Street Cruise was created by John Wells of Low Country Classics and supported by Springfield Area Merchants & Business Association (SAMBA) and Springfield Preservation and Restoration (SPAR).  Low Country Classics is a home building company that specializes in the historic neighborhoods of Jacksonville.  The idea came out of John's memories of his high schools days when Main Street was the place to be and be seen for teenagers in the 1950's and 1960's.  During those decades, he cruised up and down with his buddies and this year he wanted to recreate that feeling. With that in mind, the classic car lover decided to call up all his car club friends to see if they were interested and the rest is history.

The Main Street Cruise is just that - a cruise, not a standard car show, because people are urged to show off their classics by driving them up and down Main Street. Last month's initial cruise attracted nearly 1,000 spectators and over 100 classic cars cruising Main Street between 3rd and 10th Streets.  Businesses, such as City Kidz and Uptown Market, opened for the cruise and were packed throughout the night.  The economic benefits of the cruise were witnessed as far north as the Trout River, where businesses like Joseph's Pizza had unusually busy nights.

Tomorrow's event is expected to draw as many as 3,000 people and 200 to 250 classic cars.  In addition to the cruise, businesses such as Uptown Market & City Kidz will be open along with various vendors and food trucks lining Main Street.  Two live bands will also be on hand. Grandpas Cough Medicine, a popular modern grassroots band, will play from 5:30pm-7:30pm.  The 77d's, a rockabilly band, will play from 8pm-10pm.  SAMBA and SPAR will have courtesy tables between 3rd and 4th Streets with local information, Springfield items and cold drinks available.
