Cross-town urban bike routes
« on: April 07, 2009, 11:22:23 AM »
I took a 40+ mile meandering bike ride from San Marco to Jax Beach and back early Sunday morning. For the most part I rode the bike lanes on Beach Blvd, which isn't too aesthetically pleasing, specifically between University Blvd & St. Johns Bluff.

I did take a few detours, veering off onto the side roads and that really made the trip worthwhile. Neighbors were out walking their dogs, doing yard work and giving waves.

It made me think: What would be some good alternative routes across town given one isn't pressed for time? There's not many direct east-west routes besides the main arteries, but I’d like to try and piece together a patchwork of  routes that gets you off the busy main roads and lets you see some of the neighborhoods between here and the beach. Or anywhere in town for that matter.

This site allows you make pedestrian/cyclist oriented route maps, but it's a bit tedious:

http://www.trails.com/googlemap.aspx

If anyone has any favorite routes they ride on their sides town, or knows of any good sites, feel free to post them here.

Have you looked at any of the local routes uploaded to mapmyride.com?

Beach Blvd at 430 am is smooth sailing. It's the return trip that motivated me to look for alternate routes.

Cool site.  Here's one for David:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/fl/jacksonville/586411945

That looks like an awesome route. Takes you away from the rush of Beach & Atlantic, I'll def have to attempt that soon.

Here's a much shorter, but very scenic route that I take from San Marco to Ortega often:

what a great site, thanks for the heads up Joe & Traveler!
