Forum strives to emotionally connect Orlando to St. Johns River

Kevin Spear |  Sentinel Staff Writer
November 11, 2008

Lawyers are waiting anxiously for a verdict in a case pitting North Florida against Seminole County, which wants to draw water out of the St. Johns River.

It's an early battle in a water war, with much of Central Florida hoping to meet the thirst of its growing population by pumping from a river that also defines the look and activities of downtown Jacksonville.

Now comes John Delaney, former Jacksonville mayor, current University of North Florida president and high-profile champion of Florida's biggest river. He is the keynote speaker at the forum "Reconnecting with the St. Johns River." The free event, from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, is sponsored by the Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies at the University of Central Florida.

Sounds like a good thing to me.  The more people that area aware of the river and benefit from it, the more opposition there will be to pulling more water from it.

Thats great in the sense that it could get more people concerned about the river. On the flip side, if Orlando ever gets the mentality that the river is important to their needs, they might try to hone in on our love of the river and its importance to us(not that they need anything we have). We all know that if Orlando wants something(that includes water) they arent like Jacksonville, they wont sit back and wait for it they will go after it.

I can see that side of the argument as well.  Maybe we can deny the river even exists.  Would Orlando (save Sanford) even know it were missing?  :)

A verdict has been reached, and it's not good for Jacksonville

Judge OKs water withdrawals from St. Johns
Ruling clears way for water management district to approve permit for Seminole County despite Jacksonville's opposition

A state administrative judge Monday rejected the arguments of Northeast Florida governments and the St. Johns Riverkeeper that a Central Florida utility should not be allowed to withdraw water from the St. Johns River for its customers.

The ruling clears the way for the St. Johns River Water Management District to permit withdrawals by Seminole County that were criticized by activists who said the river’s ecology could be damaged downstream, as less water flowed toward the ocean at Mayport.

John Delaney may have bungled the Courthouse but he gets lots more brownie points with me on his acquisition and preservation of thousands of acres of Jacksonville and his fight for the St. Johns.  As has been noted in other quarters, he will be long remembered for his protections of the environment well past the life of any courthouse or other building in this City.  No man made monument can outlast the works of nature!

I only wish his preservation plans to set aside more land could be continued.  We have a wonderful opportunity at present with the substantial lull in real estate values.  Surrounding counties would be smart to do the same.  It was disappointing to see St. Johns County voters defeat such an opportunity last year.  Generations will live to regret it.  The quality of life is so much higher in more forward thinking communities.  We sow our seeds of despair, often in the name of saving a few pennies in taxes.

Jacksonville needs to keep up the good fight and appeal this decision.  Orlando will have an insatiable appetite and won't be satisfied until the river is bone dry!
Hey!  Whatever happened to just plain ol' COMMON SENSE!!
