My son starts FSU this fall, and one thing I noticed for all of the large public universities was the lack of university owned student housing. It's not quite as bad at FSU as say UCF, but they basically told us not to expect campus housing as a sophomore. Do you think that the decision not to invest more in student housing might be influenced by the private sector? Or is it more a function of not being able to keep up? It certainly helps the economics of projects like the ones lining Gaines St.

It was told to me a few weeks ago in Tallahassee, that FSU is trying to get out of the student housing business. The thought was that land on campus is limited for new educational facilities. So many universities like FSU are allowing the private sector to take the student housing market. If that's the case, get ready to see a lot more stickframe mid-rise projects going up throughout Tallahassee's urban core.

That's interesting. I've seen a lot of private student housing go up in both Gainesville and Tally lately. This could be good if there's real competition allowed to take place without something like RealPage.
