Friendship Fountain Reopening Delayed Again
« on: May 22, 2023, 04:24:17 PM »
Heads would roll in any other city for this bullshit.

Friendship Park has been closed for over THREE YEARS, and now the reopening has been pushed back again to mid-July.

https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/local/friendship-fountain-renovation-hits-snag-opening-pushed-back-july/77-3202ffa3-e7c7-4e6e-801a-f1fddd112064

By the time it reopens, assuming it happens in July, we'll be at nearly a FOUR YEAR closure just to restore the fountain.

The actual park doesn't even appear to have been started yet, and the timeline for that piece given above is another three years.

Keep in mind this thing has been operational for over a year now:

Just so little care given to the average Jax citizen by those in charge of these projects.

Great planning, but typical, James Weldon Johnson Park, Friendship Park, and Lenny's Lawn will all be closed for construction at the same time. Perhaps the Fountain will open in July (but not for the Independence Day fireworks and festivities), but when will Phase 2 start?

If I read this correctly, the opening of the actual park is still three years out?

I took this
Quote

The new timeline is to have the water pumping by the middle of July.

"If it's going to be done, it needs to be done right," said Edgecombe."

In the next three years, the city is also planning to bring a splash pad, where Ammi and his little girl will really be able to have some fun.

To mean that sometime in the next three years they might start on the splash pad.

There’s just no urgency or accountability.

“If it’s going to be done, it’s got to be done right” is a fair quote to explain delays after 12 months if you’re renovating the entire park.

We’re fixing the fountain, and the park has been closed for almost three and a half years.

I walk and drive by that fountain multiple times a day, and if any significant work on the damn thing has taken place in the last year plus, I haven’t seen it.

“There was a slight delay with the audio equipment” doesn’t cut it when the fountain has been operational now for over a year.

It’s the same bullshit as the shared used path.

Taxpayer funded public space held hostage for YEARS by lax or inept project management who genuinely don’t seem to care if citizens have to wait for months or even years on end to regain access to shared public spaces.

If any of us routinely missed our deadlines at work by years, we’d be fired on the spot.

It’s what really concerns me about both JWJ and Riverfront Plaza. We close perfectly serviceable public spaces before we have a clear, concrete plan about how to renovate and reopen them to the public as swiftly as possible.

Timeline was a big issue for me regarding the Landing site years ago. I knew we'd not only lose several businesses and consistent programming, we'd also have to live through a full decade of the space being empty before a replacement was built. Hopefully, the Deegan administration can speed up the pace a bit.

I walk my dog down to the park several times a week and to see them move the fence line out even further from the fountain because they tore up even more of the park was SO disheartening. Riverfront Parks Now told the Chamber's Downtown Council a few months ago that it would be done in June and I was skeptical.

^I find it quite disingenuous to say that missing audio components have caused the delay in reopening when the site currently looks like it was hit by a nuclear weapon.

Who is actually in charge of this project and how can they be publicly flogged for taking more time to fix a fountain than LA could build a nearly $6B football stadium?

I rode by this project alot on my my bike and would rarely see someone working on it. I hope it's not a time and material job because if it is the tax payers are getting hosed.

The way world events are transpiring and coming to an adverse fruition, we will all be a part of the upper atmosphere BEFORE this is completed. I don't understand; I just don't understand. No excuse for this.......NONE.

Stopped by for a closer look on my way home.

Photos coming a little later tonight.

Everyone involved needs to be fired and never allowed within a half mile of another city park again.
