But he and his crew are meatballs compared to what Disney can bring to the table. This entire thing is a complete joke already. The only people likely to get crushed, harmed and/or disparaged in a fruitless fight against the mouse are them. Trump is already taking advantage.
There have been many bills passed in the FL legislature and signed/heralded by DeSantis that were struck down as unconstitutional. They no doubt knew or highly suspected they would not be sustained, but the whole point is to provide 'red meat' to the MAGA base. Millions if not tens of millions of dollars were wasted to defend these laws in court. However, he paid no political price for that.
He ultimately does not care if he prevails against Disney, as long as he can use them as a whipping boy on his journey to the White House. He knows Disney can't leave the state and the legal wrangling will not finish before November 2024 regardless. It is a big part of his 'war on woke' that is his allure to the MAGA base. Likewise the Trans community is the scapegoat required to generate the fear and hate required to get them to turn out and support him. The consequences to them as individuals or to our society as a whole be damned. As Jaxlongtimer said, governing is not the objective but simply the accumulation of power.
About ten days ago I attended a DeSantis rally in Spartanburg SC. Obviously I don't support him, but seeing a candidate in person provides insight that you can't get otherwise. He received a warm welcome and lots of applause on his rhetoric. The 900-1000 in attendance cheered his attacks on Disney as loudly or louder than anything else he said. Trump stands in his way for the moment, but the average SC Republican would support DeSantis if Trump falters, IMO.
It seems to me Florida is in a 7/24 cultural war that serves no purpose other than DeSantis' political ambitions. No doubt he will do the same if elected President. Many say that his attack on Disney, and other things he is doing, would hurt him in the 2024 general election, and there is some truth to that. But he has to win the GOP nomination first, so he has to take his chances that he can overcome that or get voters upset about other issues when the time comes.
