In 1991, the German government allowed the public to open the "Stasi files" that the East German secret police had kept on them. It's estimated that less than half of those who thought they had files applied to see them. The majority didn't want to know. One of the biggest reasons given for not finding out was that people were worried that their present-day relationships would be damaged if they learned that others close to them were informants.
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."
