Henry Klutho Historical Marker
« on: April 13, 2022, 02:22:58 PM »
Howdy!

It's hard to believe, but Jacksonville's most known and celebrated architect, Henry J Klutho, has no marker, signage, monument, etc to remember him and his work! The only reference to Klutho in all of Jacksonville is Klutho Park. SPAR is changing that by having an official historic marker installed at the corner of 9th & Main (on Strings Sports Brewery property) to honor his legacy. Of note, the marker will be immediately between the beautiful Klutho Apartments on Main Street, now Operation New Hope's HQ, and his one of kind home on West 9th. SPAR is crowdfunding this marker, and others in coming years. Donors to the Klutho historic marker will get to tour the aforementioned Klutho house on West 9th, which hasn't been open to the public in decades.

If you're interested in donating/touring the Klutho house: https://www.sparcouncil.org/springfield_historic_marker_task_force

If Council Member Ferraro's bill to place a referendum on the ballot is successful, and it passes, what becomes of a Klutho, and every other historical marker in Jacksonville?
The text of the proposed ballot question:
Quote
Shall the City of Jacksonville remove historic
monuments and markers, defined as fixed assets
that are identifiable because of particular
historic, national, local, or symbolic
significance, on City-owned property?"

(Proposed) Ordinance 2022-0265 https://jaxcityc.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=10702958&GUID=F739963B-E826-494D-8C96-73D0FF0540D8

Contrary to how it is being characterized in the local media, the Ferraro referendum is not just about "Confederate monuments"  but every historical marker. Sort of an "All Markers Matter" approach.

Please oppose 2022-0265
