$39 million shipyard planned for Commodores Point
« on: January 13, 2022, 11:38:00 AM »
I wonder exactly where this will be going?

Quote
Chesapeake, Virginia-based Fincantieri Marine Systems North America is bringing more than 300 jobs to Jacksonville as it sets up a $39 million marine repair operation at Commodores Point Downtown.

Quote
“We are investing millions of dollars in waterfront improvements, including bringing in a large dry dock, which will allow us to be a top-tier marine repair operation,” Fincantieri President and CEO Ryan Smith said in the company’s news release.

Quote
“The dry dock will be U.S. Navy-certified, which will enable us to repair and maintain Navy vessels in addition to our work on commercial and Coast Guard vessels.”

The release said that in August, Fincantieri received approval from the Navy to participate in repair and maintenance delivery orders on the Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships currently homeported in nearby Mayport.

Good question.  The Freedom class ships are ~400ft long so that will be a substantial drydock.

Does this mean the Navy has decided not to decommission the Mayport LCS ships?

I have confirmation that the plan is to take over and upgrade the North Florida Shipyards location.
