McMillion$ Documentary Featuring Jacksonville
« on: April 08, 2020, 10:23:44 PM »
Must-see TV putting Jacksonville on center stage including many locals and shots of Downtown, the beaches, our marshes and the local FBI office on Gate Parkway:

McMillion$ is a global hit 6-part documentary series by HBO (available on select streaming services) featuring Jacksonville's "backwater" FBI office making the "big time" and local participants for about 50% of the air time in each episode.  It's about the "almost got away with it" 1987-2001 theft and investigation of McDonald's high value Monopoly game tickets, including virtually all of its $1 million winners, which were then sold to a far flung complex web of "winners" including many in or from Jacksonville, its ultimate epicenter.  Total ticket theft: $24 million.

The cast of characters begins with a starring local FBI agent who breaks all the stereotypes of a G-man to the point of disbelief that he actually is an FBI agent.  Other characters include a member of the Colombo crime family who meets an untimely death and his take-no-BS chain smoking wife, an unreformed drug dealer, a surprise mystery informant not revealed until the very end, a hard charging local US attorney who takes no prisoners (better to say he doesn't allow anyone to avoid prison), a McDonald's corporation executive that works with an FBI undercover operation and a whole host of other characters that defy reality.  Plus, no one can figure out how the theft took place despite tight security measures until the mysterious "Uncle Jerry" reveals it on the stand in the courtroom here in Jax.

The story is presented with a mix of humor and strong character building with the real life participants mostly telling the story in their own words.  It also paints the impact of the scam on the lives of its participants and innocent victims.

The only reason some may not remember this national scandal is because the trial in Jacksonville began the day before 9/11.  Recently, Ben Afflick and Matt Damon bought the movie rights so look for it in theaters one day.

I watched it all in one weekend a few weeks ago and I had to pause and rewind 15 seconds in because I wasn't expecting to see Jacksonville flash across the screen. Excellent series!

FYI - There's also a really fun companion podcast that includes interviews and information that didn't make the final edit.

Don't have HBO... anywhere else?
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

I went to the first link in jaxlongtimer post and was able to watch.  At least the first episode.

It's free on HBO Go for the month of April. Along with some great HBO shows like The Wire, Sopranos, Succession, and Six Feet Under.

I was a bit let down by the documentary overall. The first episode is incredible and like Ken said-Agent Doug is a character, but they could have easily condensed it into 3 or 4 episodes. Or just made it a 2 hour movie. Still well worth the watch though and cool to see the Jax links.

Watched 3 episodes last night before falling asleep on the fourth. Will try to finish it this weekend.

For something to watch with a local connection, I recommend “Hurley” which is the autobiographical film about the life of Hurley Haywood, a local racing car legend and the local Brumos Raceteam.  A few brief shots of downtown Jacksonville in the 80s.  Original Brumos Porsche dealership in Springfield in a building that still exists.

The address of the original dealership is 1444 North Main, but it wraps around to the white building on 5th Street.  There are some Loyd Sandgren pictures of it floating around on the internet.

There's a cool Brumo's Jacksonville reference early on in Ford vs. Ferrari, too.  What might have been.  Great movie.
