DCPS Calls for Online Schooling thru Mid-April
« on: March 18, 2020, 07:57:55 PM »
I get the concept, and I know we've never encountered a pandemic, but even though now they are keeping everyone out of the schools, the children are still playing outside together with no social distancing and doubtful handwashing. Toys are shared; sports equipment is shared.  I get that they are kids, but what are the parents supposed to do - are the kids going to return to school mid-April (if not later, or if at all this year) possibly carrying COVID-19?  I feel for the single parents, how do they get someone to watch their kids without putting those people at risk?  There just aren't any easy answers, and we are all learning as we go.  Thoughts?  Ideas?

DCPS isn't calling for online schooling, that's pretty much FDOE. Unless they're just going to cancel schooling entirely, it's kind of their only choice.

This is a challenge unlike any other. Somehow we have to reach these kids and get them to be part of keeping people safe. With the way things are looking, it seems possible, if not likely, that schools might not reopen this year. With that in mind, there's a responsibility on the part of both our government and every one of us to do the best we can to encourage healthy habits and protecting each other's safety, particularly the most vulnerable.

Hopefully we get our crap together about getting people tested, and figuring out who to isolate. Manufacturing tests and ventilators are some of the most important things we can have going on right now. Hopefully as time goes on we'll have more creative solutions to accomplish those and encourage spending to keep the economy moving.
So, to the young people fighting in this movement for change, here is my charge: march in the streets, protest, run for school committee or city council or the state legislature. And win. - Ed Markey
