I am befuddled, confused, and distraught. I stumbled upon this article on the internet about the USS ORLECK, which is now a Museum in Lake Charles, Louisiana, potentially moving to Jacksonville; if this is true, then Jax is being very hush hush about the Orleck's move to Jax; has anyone heard anything about this? It seems to be all over the internet. Please click on the link below and read for yourself, and, there's many more articles and websites talking about the Orleck's "potential move to Jacksonville (at the Shipyards), and, it was on the news in Lake Charles; no news coverage in Jax unless someone has heard or seen something that we all haven't. Let me know your thoughts guys. And if you come across any other news or sites on the internet, please share within this thread. Thanks!!!

I would prefer a riverfront parking lot to this rust bucket. For a Republican-led government, we sure do love handouts stimulating the local economy.

I'm surprised no one in this forum posted this story; are most of you against bringing the Orleck to Jax? It might be a catalyst for the convention center and other things that might pop up in that area; who knows. LOL, "hand outs," "stimulating the economy." That's the way it seems with our City Government.

BTW, thanks Charles and Ken for the links; just wondering why I didn't hear anything from within this forum, (or much at all if anything); thanks again.

One of the links in both of our posts was from Jaxson Magazine, the host of this forum.  Granted, the JM article is from last July.
Perhaps no one posted anything here because we've seen all this before, ship coming, ship not coming, ship coming, ...

Heights, this is the same group that tried to get the Adams.  I agree with you that it would be a good thing, but then I believe we are both navy vets.

I'm all for anything that will bring people downtown except when we have to give away the farm to do it.  This proposal doesn't cost the City anything except some unused doc space so I don't see what the opposition could possibly be.

Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Navy vet here... strongly oppose this rustbucket becoming our problem
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

"Rustbucket," LOLOLOL...she is very old, and probably is a rust bucket. I say give it a shot and see what happens. They are estimating almost 200,000 visitors a year I think. Don't know if that is a lot or not, but I'll bet with all the traffic that comes up and down I-10 and I-95, and I-295, I really believe quite a few visitors will stop in, tour it, and move on south; hopefully this will be the case along with superior marketing, promotion, etc. of the museum. And yes, our hearts have been broken before...it's coming, it's not coming, maybe it'll come, good chance it won't come, etc. Always getting our hopes high; but I hope they bring her on in and let's see whether it all comes together for the good of downtown and the city.

In theory, it seems like a decent idea if there's no cost. But I'd imagine there will be maintenance and upkeep costs. And maybe they project all those visitors, but that seems a stretch. With all due respect to the naval architects who designed the Orleck (and the people who served on the ship), it's not like the Orleck is an 'interesting' (e.g. battleship or carrier) or historically significant vessel. And sitting alone on a dock next to a downtown full of empty lots (unintentionally ironic statement), it seems like another idea destined for failure.

And the problem for me with ideas that fail (even if there is no cost) is that they reinforce the false narrative that downtown is a lost cause and won't be worth any investment.

I can see a ship - even the Orleck - being successful as part of a vibrant downtown. Because after you spend a few minutes on the ship, you'll want to go do something else (eat, shop, get coffee, visit a park or museum, etc). Or vice-versa.
