New World Avenue renamed
« on: December 02, 2019, 11:01:20 AM »
Noticed this weekend that New World Avenue has been renamed to POW-MIA Memorial Parkway.  A little digging showed this ordinance was passed last year.  Guess it takes a while for signage to appear; pretty sure it was still listed as New World 3 weeks ago.

Good catch, I noticed this when I was heading out to Bent Creek on the expressway last week.

The City found they had spelled Philips Highway wrong on most of the signs.  They said it would take years to get them all fixed.

Alas, the US basically sucks at memorials.  There is nothing more pathetic than naming existing structures as a memorial.  Instead of renaming the road, why not build an actual memorial?  Are we so bankrupt (intellectually and fiscally) that all we can come up with are new road signs?  Am I the only tired of all the mickey mouse half-ass crap?  You want to honor POW and MIA's, then build an actual monument to them because **** like this isn't good enough.

It all depends on how much signage.  1st Street was renamed for a few blocks to some preacher that is still alive because Reggie Gaffney LIED and said it would only be the Honorary signs.  Well, that was not what happened and the green street signs went up less than a month after the name change.  POS

I like the way they do it in Philadelphia.  If you want to have an honorary road they don't rename anything - they simply add an honorary sign to the existing one.

I believe there actually is a memorial located on the newly named parkway.  Or at least one is planned.

Nice!  Wish it was in a more prominent location but a huge step up from freeway overpass.
