I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the old Atlantic and East Coast Railroad, which crossed over Bay Street at this point to access the rail yard at their Jefferson Street freight depot. Bay Street has obviously been filled in but you can still see one of the old viaduct's supports in the last photo

Incredible.. to have this sort of information just that quick and readily available from a photograph, this is beyond what I imagined they would've been. Thank you, Ennis & everyone!

No problem! Thanks for making this post. It's something I've always been intrigued by as well. This is one of the areas of town I wish that I would have been able to experience during it's heyday.
