5 Loaves 2 Fish closes after seven months

Quote
Chef Toben Stubee and his wife Deborah Stubee announced yesterday that they are closing their food truck and brick-and-mortar 5 Loaves 2 Fish restaurant, citing not enough business as the reason.

The 10,000-square-foot restaurant opened in the bottom floor of the Ameris Bank Tower, formerly known as Riverplace Tower the week before Christmas 2016.

When Deborah Stubee spoke to the Business Journal in January, she said that being based in an office tower wouldn’t hurt them – that it actually helps bring in a built-in customer base.

Now, Toben Stubee cites the office tower as one of the main reasons for the restaurant’s demise.

“The building capacity wasn’t what it was supposed to be,” he said. “It was a great spot, it had potential if somebody had the pockets deep enough to trudge through it, but really, it was hidden in the bottom flood of the building. There were people working in the building that didn’t even know there was a restaurant down there.”

5 Loaves 2 Fish also suffered from not being visible from the street, and most importantly, lack of signage.

“When I opened, I was told that come January there would be 1,400 people in the building, but then that story changed,” Stubee said. “And they were supposedly working on quotes to put up signs, but it still never happened after seven months.”
