I beg your pardon.

I was kidding...sort of. I realised today that when Nirvana's Nevermind was released, Sgt Pepper's was 24 years old (I was working at Turtle's at the time).

Nevermind was released 28 years ago.

Meanwhile, I was at the St. Augustine Amphitheater (I refuse to call it "The Amp") 3 times recently for Vampire Weekend, Kacey Musgraves and a free show with Kurt Vile. Would have been back again this Saturday for the awesome local Latin band LPT, but I don't feel like driving there yet again. Dad Rock Live is seriously doing something wrong.

Really, because I didn't realize Machine Gun Kelly, Lumineers, Zac Brown Band, Blink 182, Brantley Gilbert is considered Dad Rock but ok. Not saying they don't get their fair share of "dad rock" but they've got a lot better of the years with a variety of different acts.

I don't know about those others, but Blink 182 and the Lumineers are definitely dad rock.

Lol, okay because i'm pretty sure the context of dad rock in this thread is groups like Chicago, The Doobie Brothers and Sting.

Yes, traditionally, "dad rock" is music from the 60's and 70's. But those "dads" are granddads now. There's also nothing wrong with it. The only issue is that the vast majority of shows that Daily's Place has gotten are, well, older music for older crowds. In format and capacity St. Augustine Amphitheater is nearly identical to Daily's, and it's much more poorly located. But they're killing Daily's when it comes to getting newer acts.

And even a lot of the newer acts they're getting also appeal to that same older crowd. Radio-friendly folk rock like the Lumineers and crossover country like Zac Brown Band and Brantley Gilbert are hardly new ground for Jax. And Blink 182 has been around for like 25 years. Again, no problem with any of those bands playing there, it just sucks that they're the vast majority of what plays there.

I've got no complaint on the type of acts coming to the region because I remember a time when Jacksonville struggled to get these acts over here. There was a time decades ago that because of the lack of quality venues in this area not only was Jacksonville competing with Orlando and Tampa for big-name acts, they had to fight with arenas in Daytona Beach, Gainesville, and Tallahassee.

Also just because a city like JAX now attract these stale dad-rock acts are more awesome cities with more awesome venues turning these acts down? Let's be thankful that not only the regions concert choices have vastly improved over the last decade but also Daily's Place didn't cannibalize but complimented the other quality live music venues in the First Coast.

When I was in high school (I graduated in 1990) and even into college, Jax got a decent number of big shows. Not sure what happened.

Bringing this back after five years because I just saw that the Amp in St. Augustine booked a three-night Pretty Lights (the hottest live act in electronic music) stint coming off their sold out return to Red Rocks.

Looking at Daily's Place schedule, they have three shows booked for September (My Morning Jacket, Alanis Morissette, and Creed); three shows booked for October (Boyz II Men, Brothers Osborne, A Boogie with da Hoodie), and one show booked for November (A Day to Remember). Beyond that, it doesn't look like there's anything on the schedule until Rod Stewart in February 2025.

During that same period where Daily's has 7 shows booked, the Amp has over 30 (Pretty Lights, Alabama, OAR, Goose, Vampire Weekend, The Black Crowes, the Used, Jewel, etc.).

I've posted about it a few times over the years, but it feels like St. Augustine continues to just eat our lunch when it comes to frequency and diversity of acts they're booking at the Amp. Conversely, it's almost like Daily's Place/Bold Events is being run by a random 45-year old man squeezed into an old letterman jacket whose favorite movie is American Pie and only exposure to music came between 1992 and 1999.

As we continue to invest public dollars into the area surrounding the stadium, feels like Bold Events/Live Nation could be doing a lot more to make Daily's Place a contemporary, relevant, 100+ night a year music venue instead of the 30 event nostalgia trap for the 40 & 50 somethings. There's definitely room for the annual shows from Matchbox 20, Bush, and Third Eye Blind, but there's just so much more out there.

Great bump Ken. I forgot about this one, but it's a classic. Let's check in and see how the great venue war of NE Florida has gone so far in 2024.

Daily's Place

Rod Stewart, Turnpike Troubadours, Needtobreathe, Judah and the Lion, Brian McKnight, Robin Thicke, Dave Matthews Band x2, Parker McCollum and Corey Kent, Aly and AJ, Doobie Brothers, SWV, Two Door Cinema Club, New Kids on the Block, Lamb of God, Slightly Stoopid/Dirty Heads, Train, John Legend, Jane's Addiction, Bush/Jerry Cantrell/Candlebox, Soul Asylum/STP/Live

St. Auggie Amp

Willie Nelson x2, Keb Mo, The Fake Beach Boys, Foreigner, Tom Segura x2, Tedeschi Trucks, Widespread Panic x3, REO Speedwagon/Cheap Trick, Echosmith, Staind, Billy Strings x3, Brothers Osborne, Social Distortion/Bad Religion, Thievery Corporation, JJ Grey & Mofro x2, G Love and Special Sauce, Allman Betts Band, T-Pain, Buddy Guy, Pepper/Iration, Switchfoot/Matt Nathanson/Blue October, Thursday/Hawthorne Heights, UB40, Slash, Neon Trees, 311, Crowded House.

Florida Theater
It's been a rough year. I will spare them the embarrassment

Not that many acts that I personally like, but the Amp seems to be drawing more acts that people will travel and stay overnight to see.

Does Daily's proximity to the Arena affect its bookings?  Avoiding conflicts?  Add the stadium, maybe the Performing Arts Center and the Florida Theater, too.  If this is happening, how many dates does  that take away and does that make it harder to fit into tour schedules of "hotter" acts?  The St. Augustine Amphitheater, given its remoteness, may actually have a scheduling advantage if conflicts there are less of a concern.

Lol, thanks for calling me out for saying this! Seriously though, I’m 43 this month and to this day I’ve only been to Daily’s Place for wrestling. There just isn’t much that appeals to me versus the St. Augustine Amphitheater, Jack Rabbits and other venues. Unfortunately I don’t see this changing in the near future.
