M Shack closed on Sundays (Except for the Town Center location)
« on: January 05, 2017, 10:16:28 AM »
I saw a sign in the window of the Riverside location that, going forward, the Riverside, Atlantic Beach, and Nocatee locations will be closed on Sundays so that their employees can spend time with "friends, family, and fellowship" or some such nonsense. The Town Center location will remain open on Sundays due to a pre-existing agreement.

What a transparent attempt to put an altruistic spin on the decision to cut payroll.*

*I would love to be proven wrong on this front, to find out that the lost hours would be made up to their employees in other ways. I doubt that's the case, though.

Interesting take on it.  When I worked retail for a while I was working weekends and it drove me crazy.  I finally requested and welcomed a guaranteed day off on the weekends.

Even if they are closing those locations on Sundays because they aren't pulling in enough to justify being open is that a problem?  Would you blame them?  Do you really expect them to put up a sign that says "we're going to be closing on Sundays because we are losing money"?

They're free to do what they want, of course, and I suspect that lack of business is the reason for it—whenever I went to the Riverside location on Sundays, it was rarely busy—but I'm skeptical that the *real* reason for closing one day a week was a selfless one.

Can't it be a little bit of both? If you're not pulling in the expected business, what's the point of having people work when they could be off having a day to themselves?

I'm sure there are people who enjoy an extra day off. I'm also sure there are people—already underpaid—who do not like seeing a smaller paycheck but are being told to "smile, you have an extra day off!"

4Rivers doesn't open until 4PM on Sundays even though I know a great deal of people who would go if they opened at 11AM

I thought all the 4 Rivers places were closed all day on Sunday. Same with all the Maple Streets.

Me too.  Their employees must be outraged they cannot work on Sundays ::)

There are numerous retail/restaurants open on Sundays that these people are free to work for.

Was I arguing otherwise? I've already said upthread that M Shack were free to run their business how they saw fit AND they likely had a legitimate financial reason for making this decision. I find the public explanation for their decision condescending.

And MMR, I have plenty of experience in the retail/service industry, including at one point being a full-time Borders (RIP) employee who saw his hours cut around when the company slowly started sinking. Never at any point did management try to paint this as a Good Thing.

(And please, no one read into that I'm saying M Shack is going the way of Borders.)

Upon M Shack opening I patronized with great expectations. Two visits and done.

The outside seating bar was an attraction, great bicycle run destination, but the precious few outside bar seats were always full,so skip it.

Besides, need to cut down on Beer consumption, bike ride more past such places. Don't Stop!

Crap fuud.
