There is no Place in the World Like Okeefenokee Swamp

The glossy black water of the Okefenokee Swamp resembled oil – black and calm enough to create a mirror image of the Spanish-moss-draped cypress trees that surrounded the entire swamp. It is a place of subtle but breathtaking beauty and one that can only be fully explored by boat as a companion. Find out more about this legendary Florida place after the jump!

Our sundown tour guide says the gator population is more like 20,000.

We paddled the kayaks to Minnie's Lake, Billy's Island and back to the state park. It was good. The weather was near perfect. The majority of the canoe trails, 30 miles available marked trails, are shaded. The current is slow moving. Even the least experienced had no trouble navigating the twists and turns of the trails through the trees.

Gators were plenty. Most times they submerged before we got close. They were mostly in the "lakes".
