Peterbrooke Chocolatier and the Story of Mixon Town

Peterbrooke Chocolatier recently announced plans to transform an abandoned bacon slicing plant into a new state-of-the-art chocolate factory. While this is big news, the most interesting part of the story is their decision to invest in the revitalization of Mixon Town. Here's the background story on this long overlooked neighborhood on the outskirts of downtown Brooklyn and Riverside.

This area really should have been included in the Better Jacksonville plan.  Too bad it focused on areas that did not need work, such as repaving neighborhoods in Arlington.  The city does a terrible job of maintaining completed projects for the long term.  This area seems to be pretty much in tact, and would be very nice to refresh a bit.  Thanks for the history on this area.

Great article. Peterbrooke will be a good addition.

My only concern, such as it is, for Peterbrooke is that it's so far away from other similar attractions. So many of the cool things in Jacksonville seem to be spread out and on their own. There'd be a much stronger vibe if just a fraction of all the news announced businesses were located within the same few blocks.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

I actually think this is one of the more interesting areas around Jacksonville - almost an area 'that time forgot'..
It hasn't fallen to the hand of some honcho politician looking to 'revitalize' an area via razing it and displacing it's citizens only to end up with vacant lots.  Lots of beautiful old structures ripe for rehabilitation and reuse.  I think the fact that McCoy's Creek and I-95/10 separating it off is actually a good thing.  I was recently in the area at EcoRelics and feel this could be a nice mixed use/industrial/artists district..  Now if JEA could just get on a light rail plan, with the first stop from Jax Terminal located along Goodwin Street between Forrest & McCoy's Creek Blvd, this area would have nice connectivity and potential for future growth - any TOD would be one stop from downtown, removing the barriers of the creek and highway, and allow for nice connectivity.
