Emphasizing Sports & Entertainment In Our Economy



Jacksonville is a sports and entertainment center, and our momentum must continue. Why? The impact is measurable and it benefits Jacksonville and all of Northeast Florida.

Now we just need to open our Downtown River in the new CRA/DIA in the USA and then we will be able to tell the world to Visit Jacksonville!

If Greater Jacksonville needed an "angle", this is a good one to exploit.

While I think we have done a great job at the professional level, have shown great improvements at the college level, I still believe we have some room to grow at the scholastic level (high school).

Having the "Gator" relationship can be translated into a lot of non-professional sports activities that would bring national tourists year round, not just around the holiday.

Where's Artis Gilmore in that picture?

Genuinely curious as to what the $140k our tax dollars have paid him have yielded for the city.

Not suggesting he hasn't earned it, but after all the mayor's fanfare about bringing him on board, it would nice to know what that money was getting us on a month to month basis.

It's amazing how important college and high school sports are down south!  If high school football games can be exploited to draw tourism to the city, I say go for it, but imo that's about the most pathetic thing I've ever heard of, lol.

Atlanta, Charlotte, and NOLA have certainly captured a lot of the college market with championship games.  Atlanta's opening the College Football Hall of Fame later this year.  It has definitely worked for them, seemed every weekend there was some event that drew fans and random people to downtown.

This whole theme is probably one of the top 3 reasons why I'll never return to the south - I don't know anything about or care about college sports, and feel left out of way too many conversations, ha.  I've finally found a world where people are both athletic and know nothing about sports, and I've left a world where obesity is rampant yet people know way too much about sports.  So ironic.

You can have all the sports teams and entertainment you want, but don't put any tax dollars towards them. If they have so many benefits, why can't they carry their own weight? When government thinks that the taxpayers should fund entertainment, it is all over but the crying. They have totally lost sight of the proper role of government and think they should subsidize bread and circuses. When the government can give you everything, they can also take everything.
