Rail Goes Green: New York's High Line Park



The High Line is a popular one mile, elevated linear park in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. Originally, a part of New York Central Railroad's West Side Improvement Project, the former rail line opened to trains in 1934. The last train to operate on this section of old track was operated by Conrail in 1980.

You must have timed it right so that we didn't get a "show" at the Standard. 

This is a way advanced concept that Jax just isn't ready for lol.  We can't even figure out whether we should keep or get rid of parking meters downtown!  Atlanta's is probably the best rails to trails example for Jax seeing as we don't have anything elevated...until we want to shut down the Skyway   heheheh

The High Line is a really neat place to visit while you are in the city.  There are even stadium style seats in a couple of places overlooking the streets that it goes over where you can sit and look at the auto and foot traffic passing.

There have been apartments built along the Line since it opened.  The units facing it actually rent for more money that those that don't.

It is a very cool place. Highly recommend if you visit.  The elevated street at shipyards could close and be ours. Lol. Just kidding.

Was there in September. This is an amazingly cool reuse of the structure. It's heavily landscaped, and is very quiet compared to the street level noise just below.

As a tourist, I've never been very impressed by the High Line.  It's an elevated walkway...cool?  It seems okay for locals to take a jog or walk the dog without worrying about cars, lights, etc., but if it's me I'm walking/running the extra distance to run by the Hudson.  But, hey, I'll EWOD (Elevated Walkway Oriented Development) anytime in Jax.  Whatever works.

Wasn't someone on MetroJax talking (a couple of years ago) about one of the elevated roads of off the Hart Bridge closing down and becoming a High Line copy?

Having just recently experiencing the High Line I think this would be an excellent idea for the elevated roadway. I like keeping it as it does provide a nice covered area for tailgating for Jags games. Make sure the vegetation provided plenty of shade for the summer months. Encourage perhaps each of our local breweries to open small beirgartens on it to provide a fun reason to take it in and enjoy the great views. Also include a permanent kiosks you might see at Disney or even our beloved SJTC to sell ice cream, cotton candy, popcorn, fries etc. Add a few access points along the way with escalator or elevator access that are connected to street car stations at ground level.  What a great addition this could be to downtown. Are you listening Jax2025??

While were at it lets add a zip line area down to the Northbank Riverwalk extension and an area where the kids could either bring their own kites or rent some neat funky kites to fly.


Of course I think a few people made the obligatory MJ comments such as let's get rocket shoes too. Lol.

Love the High Line pictures! I take it for granted this breathtaking, non-touristy, haven is just a train ride away for me but now that its getting warmer out... What lessons Jacksonville can learn from this is the public/private partnerships that went into getting this created, funded, and designed in the first place. It was definitely not a smooth path, no pun intended.

And although having something like this for Jax would be a lofty goal, a more attainable one near the High Line would be having something like the Chelsea Market in the abandoned building at the Jax Farmer's Market if its still there.

Yes, I Hiked the length of the High Line in 1986. The path is for walking, not bicycling, but there are Citibike    http://citibikenyc.com
Bike Rental Stations at either end, down at street level. The Hudson River Greenway (part of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway) , is just a block and a half West of the High Line.
