Nice article. Katherine I'll take your walking tour if you will take a paddle tour with me. I have a two seater kayak my singles were stolen and you can just sit in the front as I point out all the restricted zones to you. I'm serious. I'll have a smile on my face and be positive for the whole trip. And we can also do a Vivian Harrell Bluebag cleanup and leave it on a public waterfront access point that we still can't access years later.

I'm emailing you right now. It is Sat. Morning and we can go at anytime. I really want to tell people to Visit Jacksonville!

The team of smiling Downtown Ambassadors are a great asset to our community. I sometimes see them as I'm walking on the streets or along the RiverWalk between downtown and Riverside.  Either walk or on a bike, they see generally happy to greet me.

Since I'm usually in a rush I don't get a chance to thank them though I try to wave or say hi. Somethimes when I'm having a bad day and I can barely smile back, I try to give a hint of a smile and all of a sudden I feel better.

We may only smile or say good morning/afternoon in passing but sometimes that's all I need to perk up during a stressful day.

Please thank all of your Downtown Ambassadors for me. Let them know that while some of us are too frazzled or rushed to give thans, we give thanks to them for being there is a smile.

It's been the same story since the 80's, the "progress" made downtown is probably due as much to the population explosion than any real innovation.  If the city and developers were truly interested in growing or invigorating downtown the solution is simple, affordable housing.  I would love to live downtown, but why pay twice to three times the rent when I can live in Riverside so much cheaper and have more within walking distance.  When I moved back to Jax, I looked at some "artist lofts" downtown and found no such thing.  An "artist loft" does not have brand new appliances, hard wood floors, etc. that is a professional condo.  Provide housing that young people (not necessarily professionals) but students, artists, singles, etc can afford and the want to be urbanites will follow.
