We're at the TEDxJacksonville Salon event. We watching three Ted Talk videos. The first one posted above is Sheryl Sandberg (brother of facebook founder) on "Women Leaders".

Sheryl Sandberg got into a bit of hot water recently when she posted an ad for an unpaid intern position for her non-profit. The irony, she is an advocate for equal pay for women and now she is posting an unpaid position.

More info on the link. She is now paying interns.

Sheryl, pontificating on the gender differences between men and women. Women more likely to diminish their positive traits then men. Women more likely to take on more responsibilities and give up careers after childbirth.

The talk focuses on women and their careers. The major point...don't leave before you leave. She says that many woman decide to stop persuing leadership positions because they start planning for the future (kids and family) maybe a bit too early.

If we study what is merely average we will remain merely average. Let's study the outliers.

This guy is pretty funny.

*No matter how happy harvard students were at their initial success they soon lose that happiness and focus on the pressure, compeition...

His topic is about the science of happiness.

* the external world is responsible for about 10% of your happiness.
* Job success has little to do with IQ and more to do with perception.

* as a society we've pushed happiness over the cognitive horizon. we feel we can only be happy once we are successful BUT the goal point for success always changes...so happiness is always fleeting.
* people who are happy are flooded with dopamine which means you are WAY more productive and alert and excited.
* happiness can be a learned behavior.
* we can train our brains in the same way we train our bodies.

It's very dark in here. The iPad, unfortunately, would capture just the emergency red lights.

We're on to the next talk.

he is a social psychologist that studies morality.

*large scale collaboration is very rare on earth. Bees, ants..etc
*bee colonies and ant colonies all come from a single queen. THey are all related.
* humans are an example of a species that are able to work together on a massive scale with out kinship.

*there was a time when democrats and republicans were able to work together.
* But as moral polarization increases so does a lack of corporation.

He compares the blue tie/ red tie of Obama and McCain to the same sort of symbols used in gangs, bloods vs crypts. We're marking our red and blue territories to the same mentality as is seen in gangs.

* the problem is not that we are electing bad people to congress.
* most people go to congress wanting to make a change.
* once they get there everything changes.
* there are some changes we can make.
* we need to change the social structure of DC
* politicians fly in on tuesday. leave on thursday. No one is making friends. Families are not being met.
