I am intrigued. At the very least, I expect the space to look great based upon the owners blog.

Dog's bollocks! What a great name. It could be pet friendly. Oh, wait! Our overlords, in their wisdom, have decided that dogs are no longer welcome in bars because beer is food! In some parts of the world dogs are food, but apparently food and food don't mix. https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/local/no-dogs-allowed-jacksonville-brewery-starts-petition-after-fla-dept-of-health-says-no-dogs/77-584779667 (https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/local/no-dogs-allowed-jacksonville-brewery-starts-petition-after-fla-dept-of-health-says-no-dogs/77-584779667)

sorry, didn't mean to imply Dog's Bollocks  was the name. Just my Brit way of saying it was outstanding news.

I realized that dog's bollocks is not the real name  ;D. Elephant and castle, Rose and crown, Red lion, there are lots of traditional names. But Dog's bollocks is definitely memorable!

An administrative parking deviation is requested to reduce the off-street parking requirement from 26 spots to none. The Posting House LLC application says the landlord owns and controls 20 shared parking spaces on-site and there are 12 on-street parking spaces in front of the proposed business.

The Posting House LLC seeks a waiver of the minimum distance requirements from a church for a liquor license, an exception to sell beer and wine and the administrative deviation for parking.

Southside Baptist has been pretty reasonable about allowing beer and wine sales, and they have been pretty good about allowing neighboring business to use their parking lots. However, they have been openly hostile about allowing use of their parking lots by neighboring businesses that serve beer and wine. This will never happen.

Sounds like they are concerned about drunk drivers. Perhaps they would be alright with an uber dropoff/pickup lane in their lot.  ;)

You can see the rooftop "sun deck" from inside the church and they have had some sticky situations with what has been seen.  The church is very aware that they are there.

Baptist pastors are allowed to get married and have kids, so they don't generally have the same problems as those who report to the Vatican.

Perhaps it is not as prolific, but don't necessarily sell them short when it comes to those "problems".

Am I missing something?  How are they going to potentially fit 99 seats in that place?  I count 38 in that layout shown.

Since they need a few zoning exceptions (liquor distance waiver, parking deviation, sale/service, etc).. they are likely submitting a seating capacity of up to 99 seats to max out the space if they wanted to. The way the zoning code works, you ask for the max when you are paying someone to navigate your approvals, etc. You may get a reduced seating capacity as a condition of the exceptions... or you may only have 40 seats on a normal night... but if you host some big event and expect the bar to be jam packed with 75 drunk Englishmen yelling about the World Cup, you don't want to have some arbitrary seating cap limit your ability to make money... or go back and ask for another exception.

1,600 square feet with no kitchen space is actually a decent-sized shell for a fire marshal-approved seating capacity of 100 people.

Yeah, I saw that too and wondered the same thing. It's not really much of a 'pub' and more of a bar. That said, I guess a pub isn't strictly required to serve food - but really...what's the point?

There was a mention of "limited food options" but I thought the point of the pub was the pint.
And maybe some darts.

Maybe they'll have crisps for you to snack on.  As someone who loved the O'bros and London Bridge fish and chips, this was a disappointment to me.

They will also offer teas, kombucha, and coffee. Because I needed yet another walkable place to drink coffee. It really is all about me.

Ok, it appears I am close to enjoying a pint. They are looking for a bartender and are "weeks away". Normally I would consider "weeks away" single digits, but this is Jax. 117?

Mrs SMM is ready to claim "The snug"(back lounge area). Yes, just because of the name.

Great news!. We will definitely be there. Of course, it is such a pain having to schedule around yet another championship final.(Stanley Cup) Title Town can be a little exhausting.

The pictures of the interior look excellent as expected. This could create havoc for us.It was so easy to start with Matthew's bar bites and then just cross the street to Rue. Now we have to add a few hundred feet and make it a triangle.

While I think Matthew's happy hour is an amazing value (food-wise), we don't go until post happy hour times on Friday or Saturday nights. Also, it hasn't been that long since we switched from pretty much "dining room diners" to "Bar diners" and upped our frequency there. Yes, Josh is great.

Next time you are there and you see a couple and your first thought is 'what the hell is she doing with him' and it can't be money as his wardrobe looks too cheap, it is probably me.

Ha! Well I've seen you a dozen times in there!

I couldn't tell you what the restaurant looks like as we've just sat up at the bar and enjoyed ourselves there. I'm sure is nice but my wallet wouldn't appreciate the tab at the end of the night if we walked back there.

No.  I've been closely monitoring their FB page and they said no go for the Final.  That's a shame.  It sounds like the opening will be some time next week.

I do have a few concerns about this bar.  1st, it looks like it's going to be awesome so I hope that the crowds don't get crazy.  2nd, this looks almost exactly like what I'd do if I owned a bar, so now there may be no room for my theoretical future bar in San Marco.

I got delayed and didn't make it till about 2:05 so I wasn't the first customer. Doh! But the place is great and the bar was full pretty quickly. As expected, the interior is outstanding which is important to snobs like me and Mrs SMM. Based upon initial picture reactions, my wife is going to love this place.

I am not much of a beer guy, so I cannot speak to their selection but I had a speckled hen which I thought was very good.  I like the small pour options to set up your own flights. And, they have good taste in Cabs which is key for us. I expect we will be there often...probably will do a number on their wine bottles. My first thought is that it will replace the Grotto for us. And that the Grotto should have looked like this.

No bites yet (except crisps) but evidently the plan is to team with Vagabond. I have only had their excellent coffee, but that sounds good with me. Speaking of coffee, that should be available in about a week.

Looks like yet another great add to the neighborhood.

You can't really appreciate it from pictures alone.First, the owners have English accents. So, sometimes it sounds like an English Pub. Second, at least when I was there, Fawlty Towers was playing on the TV. Finally, and I think this is the clincher, you order pints.

Now, I will admit to not being an expert on the subject, but if that isn't an English Pub, well....I have no idea what people would be looking for.

Now, I will admit to not being an expert on the subject, but if that isn't an English Pub, well....I have no idea what people would be looking for.

Fair enough. Obviously was thinking of the look more than anything else - but without seeing the menu or whatever, it's hard to say. I think it's fair to say that English bars can look like anything - but at the same time, there is a particular 'look' that one tends to associate with them. A stereotype, if you will. So I was just curious.

As I said, I think it looks great.

Is this the driest response ever or did you think I was serious? At the very least, I take small comfort in knowing that I get my own jokes.

I assumed the Fawlty Towers thing was a bit of a piss-take (yeah, that's right) - but assumed the British owners and pints thing was sincere. In any even, I appreciate them not going the 'themey' route. That can be a bit cheesy.

Almost all the beers are craft, but apart from Old Speckled hen I don't see any English (or Irish!) beers listed.

Yeah, they did have Guinness. I can't remember if they had Harp.

Aren't Guinness and Harp Irish?  I was hoping for some real English beer.  Like Tetley's.  When I was in England the locals were constantly asking for Budweiser.

Yes, Guinness and Harp are Irish. There are hundreds of English beers, but even in Florida you can pretty easily find Newcastle, Boddington's, Bass, Sam Smith's, Fuller's, Wychwood, Brompton's, Conniston etc. All are at Total Wine, most are at European street. The "Posting house" seems to have none of these. Next time I drive past, I'm going to open the door and shout "Dog's Bollocks"!

From the photos posted it seems to be a neat, pleasant place, but not like any of the pubs I visited in Yorkshire.  I looked-up Tetley's online to discover they were bought by Carlsberg decades ago and closed the Leeds brewery.  According to a couple of websites I visited, no English brews were in the top 5 most popular in the UK.  Bud, Stella, Heineken, and others are more popular.  I loved the bitter.

We did an "L" last night, Matthews>Rue>Posting House and PH was really busy. We should have gone home but the lure of PH was too great :)
As expected, Mrs SMM loved it. Just need some food, and will be there a ton. Great to see such activity since that little stretch has been dark for a long time. I expect to see Curry there often as there is a great view of the grass field across the street!

It appears they will be changing out the beers quite frequently as multiple had been changed since I went Wed.

If anyone is watching their calories and want to estimate them when drinking craft, draft, or unmarked brews, most places post the ABV: Multiply the ABV X 2.5 X number of ounces to find the approximate amount of calories.

Are you saying they should go buy some at total wine to sell at the bar??  That's illegal...  Total wine keeps hundreds of beers in stock, so it's no surprise they would have a better selection than a place with 14 taps.  They have Guinness, Old Speckled Hen, and another ESB that's name is escaping me.  I was there Saturday night and Sunday and they had changed 3 of the taps between those two times.  It sounds like they are really going through some beer, so even if they have an all British line up at one point it probably won't last.  They are also at the mercy of their distributor, so Boddington's may not be an option for them.

My thoughts on the bar: great alternative from the Friday night GxG crowd.  I have some personal tweaks I'd make to the decor (framing the tile back-splash better because currently it just abruptly stops. filling the currently blank walls), but overall I like the look.  The staff is very friendly and Riley does a great job making guests feel welcome.  I liked the draught list and had no problems with the high number of craft beers.  Yesterday I enjoyed a BPA and a Guinness.

Both times I was there Mr. Bean was on the tv.  I asked if they were playing the All Bean All the Time channel, but they said no it's a loop of physical British comedies that don't need audio to be enjoyed.  They will play sports by request on the front tv and the tv in the snug will be all sports.

The impression I got from his/her comment is that since the beer is available at Total Wine, it shouldn't be that hard for them to carry it.

As an aside, I don't think I've ever been to a pub in the UK that serves Boddington's or Newcastle on tap. I have long suspected Boddington's is like the Foster's of English beer.

I just went to European street today and they had Newcastle on tap. What I am saying is that if you market yourself as an English bar you should have a good selection of English beer. Let's put it in a different perspective. If I said I was opening a Mexican themed restaurant, and I had 1 or 2 Mexican dishes, 1 central American dish and 10 Chinese dishes would you say "Oh. yes, this is authentic Mexican" or would you say "Dog's Bollocks!"

I also don’t fully grasp the “British” part of this pub, the beer they do have is better than most of the British beer you can get in the US.

Also, you may not be seeing Newcastle in British pubs because you’re not happening to go to pubs affiliated with Heineken NV. In Britain, there’s a terrible system where many if not most pubs are affiliated with the mega brewers and only carry their beer.

I think I got your point and wasn't trying to argue re Newcastle or Boddington's. That was just an observation, really.

I should, however, point out that the expression, "dog's bollocks" is meant as a positive thing, usually rendered as saying something (like this pub) is "the dog's bollocks."

You're talking about a 'tied' pub (not sure if Heineken owns any pubs in the UK, tbh). But you still don't find Newcastle in free houses, either. The issue is that is is basically only available in a bottle in the UK.

Edit: a quick Google search has taught me that Heineken owns the "Star Pubs and Bars" group in the UK. Not sure how many of these there are.

The owner's description of PH from her blog, this was created months before the place opened.

Quote
"You've probably heard the news already...we're opening a bar!"......"we wanted to bring a modern flavor of Great Britain to our little corner of Jacksonville, FL, and we want it to be a space for our local community to gather and rest—just like traditional posting houses did in the old days for travelers (and their horses!)"......."The design is a modern take on a cozy, English pub, with a moody color palette and rich, layered textures. Along with the main bar area, we will have a semi-private room which we are naming "the snug." It will be cozy, comfortable and the perfect place to curl up with a book."

After reading and re-reading, it seems like they're saying it's a pub inspired bar, but not a pub.  They're from Britain, so this is similar to what they're used to, but there will be no fish n chips or bangers and mash.  It's their business, so they can do with it what they want.

I get what Kiva is saying.  Nobody would deny that Obro's & Culhane's were/are pubs, but they also had to cater to their environment and the tastes of their consumers. O'Brothers had burgers, chicken sandwiches, chicken wings, salads and more. Culhanes has Shrimp 'n Grits, coleslaw, mac 'n cheese, avocado cobb salad and a number of other questionably british dishes. PH is burning through kegs faster than SMM and a blueberry cake donut, but I think they are trying to keep a balance between british and local favorites.

That said, The Daily Record has called it a pub (even renaming it the Posting House Pub) many times already and I'm sure they will many times in the future.  I guess this is kind of like how the JDR insists on always including a business' slogan in their articles, i.e. "The District, Life Well Lived", "Ida Claire, South of Ordinary", "Mayor Curry, dissenters must be silenced"...etc.  I'm surprised they don't call it "The Posting House Pub, Post Up Journey On".

I just didn't know what was "English-inspired" about it. The decor seems nice and neutral, if a bit identikit and uninspired (seriously looks a lot like my former local Starbucks). At the time I posted that, though, I didn't realise the owners were English. As they are - and as the bar was their idea - it is clearly "English inspired" by default.

I think - based on my recent search - that it was or is only available at one pub in Tyneside. It's a bottled drink in the UK. I searched for pubs in my area on the Star Pubs and Bars website and all the ones that I found are apparently looking for owners! Not a great sign (though apparently it's a tough business and pubs have a high failure rate).

Coffee is now live but still need to jump thru some city hoops for food. Plan on offering some stuff with a British flair but I expect it will not be "British enough" for the experts from America.

I had a London's Pride this afternoon that I thought was pretty good and they also have some English options by the bottle now which sounded interesting.

I think I may have started to wear a path in the sidewalk between this place and Rue. Life is good.

Note, there were some people that thought the horse was not equine enough. But it seemed ok to me.
