Metro Jacksonville to shut down, The Jaxson coming soon

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Cities/Jacksonville/Miscellaneous/Miscellaneous/i-VrPS8XQ/0/101789ee/L/Metro Jacksonville update2-L.jpg)

Twelve years after we first started publishing hyperlocal, urban-focused content in Jacksonville, Metro Jacksonville is throwing in the towel. As of July 9, the site as you know it will be no more. Our articles have been returned to their original creators. We couldn’t be prouder of the work we’ve done, the community we’ve built, and the progress we’ve seen in this city, but it’s time for a change.

Will there be links to The Jaxson from here, when it goes live?  I assume we will have to create new logins at the new site.
From a poster (no, not that kind, the kind printed on heavy paper, and meant to be hung on the wall) I had in college, "Behold the turtle, who makes no progress until he sticks his neck out."

Metrojacksonville provided me a forum to engage in the history and development of the city when I moved here in 2007. Over the years it turned away from the content I loved. I'm excited for The Jaxon and look forward to continuing the conversation focused on our past and future. Thank you guys for your commitment to improving this city.

This will be incorporated. You will not have to create new logins.

There's nothing to settle. That frivolous case was dismissed months ago. We're moving on to bigger, better things.

Congratulations on your new partnership with WJCT! I hope this not only draw more viewers but bring back many that got disillusioned with the site and forums with all the previous drama and stuff. I hope you'll also merge the content of ModernCities with this new site.

Thanks for the kind words, y'all! We're really excited about this new project and looking forward to getting things started.

We anticipate that Modern Cities and the Jaxson will be sister sites - Modern Cities will be the place for broader content, and the Jaxson will cover stuff that's local to the Jacksonville area.

As for the URL, it'll be www.thejaxsonmag.com.

Ditto.

I moved to Jacksonville in 2006 for a job, and within six months, I hated the city so much that I was seriously considering moving right back across I-10 to Tallahassee, or maybe up to Atlanta. Jacksonville just felt so lifeless and homogenized back then, especially coming from a 24/7 college town.

Later that year when killing time at work, I stumbled upon MetJax, and over the next couple of years, it totally changed my perspective on Jacksonville. Both historically, and in terms of our city's untapped potential.

It was incredibly inspiring to see the fine folks behind this site proposing well-thought out, feasible solutions to Jacksonville's problems, rather than just bitching about them like everyone else on the internet (including the mainstream media, post Super Bowl XXXIX).

Plus, there was just something so contagious about seeing a community united around their love for the city and their collective desire to effect positive change.

Can honestly say that if not for this site, I would have left Jacksonville in 2008 and never looked back.

Instead, I stuck around, continued to fall in love with the city and its history, gave up two years of sleepless nights and weekends working on a book about Jacksonville, and recently took a job in the heart of downtown (ironically, in the same building where Stephen Dare's Boomtown used to be) in part to be able to walk the streets and witness the progress with my own eyes every day.

Personally, it's crazy to think of how different my life might look had I not been Googling for information about Peyton's Big Idea or the Club Paris opening or whatever it was that day.

Appreciate all that you guys have done for this city.

And I'm excited for the change - I think you've outgrown these digs long ago.

As Shad Khan loves to say, if you ain't moving forward, you're falling behind.

Wow, so something good actually came from the opening of Club Paris?? Well, besides the top of Mayor Peyton's chest...

Congrats on the new opportunity!

I understand from your article that all the threads, post(er) histories, passwords, etc. will carry over transparently to the new site, correct?

What about links to posts by other posts and MJ pictures (internal links), and links to MJ articles linked externally (e.g. Facebook, etc.)?  Will they still work?

Will  the MJ page stay up for some overlapping period to forward the uninformed to the new site?

Will threads and posts still follow the MJ format of being updated on the face of the home page?

Will all the forum categories be maintained?

MJ has done a great job of building out the functionality of this site and many users find comfort in it like sitting in a favorite old lounger :).  Will we have to learn a new way all over to post and reply?

How about the search function to find posts/articles?

What would be nice to add are "like" or "thumbs up" buttons to show support for comments by others.

Thanks for your responses.

Correct. The forum isn't going anywhere.

Yes, they should still work.

The MJ front page won't be around anymore but the articles have been archived and will be available from the menu bar of the Jaxson.

No. The front page of MJ won't exist anymore.

Yes.

Right now, the forum will remain the same but we'll take this into consideration.

Yes.

Sad to see this feature go.

For years, the "Latest Discussion from the Forums" section of the MetroJax homepage has been one of the best go-to spots in the city for finding breaking news, often before it's reported anywhere else. You load it up, and within like 5 seconds you can see everything that's being discussed that day. I'm sure there's a good reason for not carrying it over, but there's just so many categories and sub-categories on the forum proper that I worry usability and discoverability will take a big hit without that aggregation piece pulling everything together in glanceable way.

We'll keep this in mind. It may be a feature we'll bring back when full integration is complete.

Agree with KenFSU.  In this day of A.D.H. D.-like  internet surfing, you may only have seconds to grab readers' attention.  Having headlines generated by threads, etc. is a must to maintain eyeballs in my opinion.  Just check out almost every news website.  Heck, that's all Drudge, CNN  and Google News do on their lead pages and their web pages are among the top most-visited websites.  Nothing wrong with doing what is proven to work :).

Looking forward to the new era.  All the best.

Lake, one other question/suggestion:  I went to your new website.  Looks great.  But the Forums are literally pushed to the side :).  I looked at the reply/comment mode for articles and it does not seem to be part of the Forum function anymore.  Are we expected to toggle back and forth between two groups of threads?  If so, is there a way to unify that at some point?

I also note the article replies/comments do not appear to have the functionality of the Forum for posting pictures or using the word processing formatting features.  Will any of this change over time?

We're actually in the midst of working on things now and will be for the next few hours. Modern Cities and the Jaxson currently use the Disqus commenting system. It's actually much easier to use and post images but it is not integrated with the MJ forum itself.

Feeding the existing MJ forum with the Jaxson is a new component that was not originally a part of the plan. Although MJ is going away, we're working to save and continue the forum itself as a community resource. In the upcoming weeks, we'll look into alternatives to enhance the functionality between them.

^To add to that, it only recently became an option for us to take on the forum, so we so we're still working on how integration with The Jaxson will shake out. Thanks for the input, y'all, we'll have more updates coming in the future as things progress.

Congrats on the big day guys!

Site looks red-hot.

Curious about a line from the announcement.

You mention that the new site is supported in part by the DIA.

The partnership makes a lot of sense, but editorially, there have been a lot of instances in the past where you guys have disagreed with the DIA on things like the Landing, District financing, etc.

You've certainly earned far beyond the benefit of the doubt over the years, and I'm confident I know the answer to the question already, but how will the partnership with the DIA affect your coverage as it relates to the DIA going forward?

Also, not sure if you guys are set up as an LLC or a nonprofit, but as an FYI, if you're a 501c, you're likely eligible for Google Ads Grants (up to $10k a month in free Adwords PPC ads). Would be pretty simple to set up a campaign, geofence your primary markets, target a bunch of keywords related to downtown Jacksonville, transportation, history, non-branded properties (Laura Street Trio, Shipyards, Lot J, whatever), etc., and rake in some relevant added eyeballs for the site at no added cost.

Thanks Ken. No worries, we control our editorial content. When the WJCT radio segment starts running, I do believe they will mention the DIA as a sponsor of the program.

If you bothered to interact with the site

the site changed over a year
