Title: Good Dough Doughnuts !?!
Post by: sanmarcomatt on January 25, 2017, 09:00:54 AM
Waistline...we may have a problem.....

So I am not much of a "donut guy" except when we stay off King St in Charleston and then I gain about a million pounds going to "Glazed  Gourmet Doughnuts" in the mornings. If this is even close to being in the same league, I may have an issue. I will be walking there, so that should burn off a bite or two. So I have that going for me....

I will be hitting the weight training just a little bit harder starting this morning.

Look goods, but have you had the Sweet Theory doughnuts? If you are needing a doughnut fix, walk over there from San Marco and you'll easily burn off maybe two doughnuts' worth of calories and holy shit are they good.

Huh?  Sweet Theory are Vegan, gluten-free, soy emulsified, coconut-oil infused hippy goodness.  No need to burn off 'calories'; those are the good kind of calories.

Their baked goods are more healthy for you than actual vegetables.

(At least that what I tell myself right before smashing a cupcake in my mouth)

 :D :D

I grew up outside Boston, at a time where Dunkin Donuts was just another donut maker in a sea of donut shops so I like to think I know donuts a little.

The Donut Shoppe in Arlington is excellent and worth the drive from San Marco.

fyi, Good Dough will have a doughnut "pop up" at Vagabond coffee tomorrow morning from 9-12. I have never been there so I may check it out.If you see a guy in a Patriots hat, it is probably me....Feel free to say hi and tell me how much you enjoy my posts.

So maybe there are more people than I think that want a "high end" donut. I went to Vagabond coffee this morning for the "pop up" and before Good Dough was finished setting up, a line starting forming for their donuts. Luckily, I had been there awhile leisurely sipping my coffee so after a moment of panic, I quickly joined the line. As I left with my box, I actually had to struggle through the crowd to leave.

I didn't care for the selection that was brought (not a huge icing fan) but clearly they are very good.(and big!) I look forward to them joining the neighborhood and seeing what kinds they will be offering. I see us hitting Bold Bean for coffee and continue up the road for a donut....

To me, Donut Shoppe has the cake doughnuts on lock.  You won't find better.  The glazed, gourmet variety is where Good Dough and Sweet Theory will have a fighting chance.

I had some of these at the Manifest event two weeks ago.  Color me completely unimpressed, especially at $4 or more a doughnut.

I had one at Vagabond this weekend and thought the exact opposite.
They were only $2.50 a doughnut and were absolutely massive.

We paid over $20 for like 4 or 5 doughnuts-- though maybe the price was marked up some because they came with a little injector of  Manifest booze.  Yeah, they were big, but I didn't really think they were very good.  Like, truly, a Publix doughnut was every bit as good as those. Just my assessment based on the ones I bought.

Not to play devils advocate, but $4-5 bucks for a large donut isn't exact highway robbery. For starters, you're paying for a locally-made, artisan product. Secondly, that seems to be the going rate for a donut as such (i.e., not a chain-made donut).

It's one thing to not like them/not prefer them...but I'd refrain from: (a) comparing to a chain like Publix, and then (b) comparing the pricing structure to a chain as well.

Well if you want to compare to a non chain, Donut Shoppe is way cheaper than that and their donuts are legit.  Probably not as fancy as this place though.

Don't disagree - that's a much better comparison ;)

But yeah, you're probably right...this one is a tad on the fancy side.

I used Publix as a comparison because they actually have really good doughnuts, in my opinion.

This statement brings into question your doughnut tasting credibility.

Like, Sweet Theory has always been top notch and I've never had a bad doughnut there.  But, I just personally didnt care for the Good Dough product.  Just my experience.

Crazy. I like sweet theory a lot and go there a ton, but Good Dough's Donuts were much better. Sweet Theory's cinnamon buns tho.. those things are top notch.

SWEET THEORY.  This is a local product that could go national and make big bucks.  Is Marcus Lemonis even aware of what they are doing?

I've been impressed by the product, the pricing, and the following. Don't always like waiting in line, and am wondering if there are any expansion plans in Jax.

I made it a point to be walking by shortly before open and I was not disappointed. The line stretched nearly a block and traffic was stopping to see what it was all about. It was hilarious. People seemed to be having a great time.

I hope to stop in next week and grab a coffee and donut:hold the chaos.

From the glimpse I had, I think the interior is going to be great.

We went this morning.  Cool place, hipsters lined up out the door, but the donuts were mediocre.

When Maple Street opened I had a similar opinion of their biscuits but they worked the kinks out so hopefully these guys can too.  They'll get another chance from me in a couple of months.

I finally braved the chaos and made it to GD on Sunday. In what is probably good news for me, I was not wowed by the donuts.

They have "raised", "cake", and  "old fashioned" varieties and after waiting in line early Sunday Morning ( I thought I was being clever going so early on a Sunday. I am not as clever as I think) ,I grabbed a sampler of all. My wife is sick and is officially withholding opinion until healthy but here is mine. Note, I am not a big fan of sweets in general(give me a piece of cake with hardly any icing) and seeing how much of their glazed icing is on the donuts, I thought it might be trouble.

Old fashioned: I found this dry and inedible. Not sure if I just don't like the style, or I got unlucky with the batch.
Cake: Ok, but there was way too much of the salted chocolate on it for me.
Raised: These seem like they would be pretty good but once again, for my tastes, they are dominated by the icing. I tried a plain sugar one which is more my style and if it had been a cinnamon, I probably would have liked it more. The sugar was less than thrilling.

I was disappointed by the lack of filled donuts (jelly, boston creme, etc) and really the lack of ingenuity compared to what I have seen in similar shops in other cities. Of course, they have barely been open so that isn't really a legitimate critique yet.

The interior is great and the service was outstanding. The line moved nicely and everyone seemed very friendly.
Based upon the activity and reaction that I have seen, GD has knocked it out of the park early. The young couple that owns it appear very nice and I am happy for their incredible early success.

For me it is a cool new coffee shop and a great addition to the neighborhood so I still give it an 'A' even though the donuts are not to my taste.

I had an incident at GD doughnuts today.

So there I was, walking by and I noticed it was just busy as opposed to packed so I decided to stop in for a cup of coffee. It was all perfectly safe and innocent as I had not been taken in by their doughnuts...was perfectly content with just the Vagabond coffee. Even though the doughnuts weren't my style, I was happy for their success! All was fine.

I am in line so of course the friendliest guy in the world asks me what I want for doughnuts or if I have any questions. I meant to....should have said..."I am just getting coffee, but thanks" and it all would have ended there. But no.

The diabolical kid pushed the "Monte Cristo" on me. And by 'pushed' I mean he answered my inquiry in the friendliest manner possible. The bastard. "It is stuffed with ham and cheese with some strawberry jam on top". WTF? Who would want that? So of course I ordered one.

Now, I am not a religious person but when I took my first bite I thought I heard angels singing...but I can't swear to it. I could feel tears welling up in my eyes it was so delicious. Since I was at the community table, I tried to make it seems like I just had allergies. I can't even remember doing it but I someway made my way out without ordering another one...or 12.

I am not sure what I am going to do as I have clearly been infected with the Good Dough virus for which I thought I was immune.

Sober? Definitely not. However, if they were open late and had locations in MA or CT in the 90's, I can't say one way or the other.

You've obviously never been to Beningan's.

Why, man?  Just.... Why?

They set my standard for Monte Cristos and Potato soup and are sadly no longer around.

I can remember it (well... not exactly) like it was yesterday...  Leaving my shift at Rio Bravo, heading over to Bennigans for a Cristo, soup and about a dozen and a half Guinesses, not remembering how I got home and getting to hear the stories from co-workers the next day.

I've found only Kickbacks can compete with the fabled Bennigan's monte cristo. Kickbacks serves a fantastic cristo. In fact that and the Donut Shoppe are the two things I truly miss about Jax since moving (that and family.....I guess).

How does Good Dough compare with The Donut Shoppe? I've traveled coast to coast and from North to South and still have not found anything to compete with The Donut Shoppe's cake donuts.

Mrs SMM and I went at 8 (open)this morning on our way to the beach. When the door opened, the line was 20+ deep. When we left at about 8:30, the line was still down the hall to the bathroom. Insanity. I cannot believe how busy they are.
And today they are having a pop up with "mini donuts" at the town center. They certainly know what they are doing.

MRS SMM was also wowed by the interior  and is fully on board the GD train and so am I as long as I stick to their lighter raised donuts and get the ones with no or little icing. Plus, I am a big fan of Vagabond coffee.

If you start going to Good Dough, you will weigh a million pounds in three years. I''ll repeat that. You will weigh a million pounds within three years of your first day at Good Dough.

Coffee Bomb, I know at that first glance on that magical June day, you were the "bomb of the month". You were honest and up front. I guess I just didn't believe you would be gone so soon. I Didn't want to believe it.

But this morning, when I saw the "Peanut Butter and Jelly " bomb sign and you were nowhere to be seen, it hit me hard. I went to the window where you can see the kitchen....just hoping....were they making a new batch? No, I had to face facts. There wasn't even an empty space in the display case...no name card.

You were gone.

Cinderella kicked in with their power ballad, "Don't Know what you got.........til its gooooooooooonnnnnnnnnne". I really felt those powerful lyrics for the first time.

A taste of heaven?

It's earthly form is a small round doughnut stuffed with coffee flavored filling and covered with coffee sugar.

So the Evil social media poster for Good Dough just announced the flavors that will be ending in July and the Monte Cristo is no more. First the Coffee Bomb disappears and now this.On top of that, the French Toast is gone too. WTF!?! It is times like these that really test one's character. Syrian refugees? Please. This is real adversity.

Of course, this is a rather obvious ploy on their part to get people to rush out and buy their favorites before the end of the month. How stupid do they think we are?

Yeah....I will go before the end of the month...but just once, dammit!

Considering all of the current disasters...North Korea, Harvey, Irma, The Jaguars front office..........I can offer a ray of good news:

Coffee Bombs Are Back! Unfortunately for me, they were changed slightly as now there is a creme brulee coating on the outside but I can "suffer"thru the too sweet coating to get into the legendary coffee filling.

For this month, there is also a blue berry cake which I had from a fresh warm batch which was crazy good. (Note. I had one to go which I had much later and it was not nearly as good as the fresh one).

And for coconut fans, my wife says the the Samoa and the German chocolate were great.

Ok, now back to less important issues.....

Sorry I haven't updated this thread as I know how much everyone looks forward to my GD updates. Right? Bueller? Bueller?
Unfortunately, the menu hasn't had much to offer me recently and I am still recovering from visiting my favorite doughnut shop in Charleston. Frankly, I may have consumed my doughnut allotment thru 2019.

However, this month's menu is showing a "Cinnamon Roll Bomb" which, based upon some of their previous "bombs", could be life altering. I am incredibly disciplined so I will be waiting until Friday to try it. Since the weather is going to suck on Friday,  Mrs SMM and I have decided that a box of doughnuts is pretty much the only way to deal with it.

Yes, I see the appeal of crazy flavors and of course you have to justify a premium price point.
But, I am a pretty boring person so I usually just want a freaking chocolate doughnut with sprinkles. Or how about  a jelly doughnut? No, not a green tea, avocado infused, acai jelly doughnut. Just a f'ing jelly doughnut! is that too much to ask???

Not anymore. 2 for 2 baby!

Oh yeah. February could be rough.

I get that alot. I will translate.

GD offers a rotating menu on a monthly basis. Many of their flavors are unusual. They have never (as far as I know) offered a basic jelly doughnut or a simple chocolate covered doughnut with sprinkles which are normally staples in your typical doughnut shop. For February, they are offering both which makes me very happy. Simple flavors done well for a simple person such as me.

Better?

Thank you.That was very nice.

I don't really know why I "adopted" GD on MJ specifically as  we spend a small fortune on various local San Marco eateries. I just love the idea of a local doughnut shop, I guess. I actually don't even go there that much. I would go more but when you're married to a babe, ya gotta watch the midsection.....

Last time I went, I had their ham, egg, and cheese sandwich and while it was fine, I was slightly disappointed it was served on a plain doughnut. I was hoping for at least a little sugary glaze to contrast with the savory fillings.

There is evidently an interesting "doughnut development" as there is signage in the space next to Stan's for "The Doughnut Factory". For those not familiar with the area, this is probably a couple hundred yards from Good Dough. Is "clustering" good for doughnut shops?!?!? I wouldn't think so and would lean toward the DF struggling but I'm a Wall Street guy not a small business Main Street guy so what do I know?

With Southern Grounds coming along with their huge build out on Atlantic, the San Marco Coffee/Pastry battle is about to heat up.

The Donut District is great! If I could edit the title of this thread I would.

Since I thought I might have hallucinated, I walked by and sure enough there is a new place, "the Donut factory". It was closed ( handwritten sign said sold out). I can't wait to check out the interior, as it looks like a good forty bucks was spent on the exterior. It appears this is a "create your own" type as they listed a bunch of glazes and toppings you can add. Maybe it is a different enough product and they can both coexist, I don't know.

I do know they are unlikely to put a dent in Good Dough's demographic of "Millennial babes that can apparently burn off the donut calories by taking selfies of themselves eating donuts". However, the DF should be able to own the Hendricks Foodmart and Stan's crowd.

The Donut District! Now that is a game changer!

My first run in with GD doughnuts was last week as my wife brought them home from a work baby shower.

Color me not impressed, but as an avid doughnut lover I do realize these were decorated probably specifically for the shower and not their best offerings.   They were the raised doughnuts with dressed up with fancy icing decoration and sprinkles on top.  The round sprinkles were terribly hard when you bit them.   :o

I will not mark them off my list, but as I work out at the beach Cinotti's has made me a serious donut and pastry snob.  Their glazed croissants are so good.  And hard to get.  If I don't pre-order some over the phone they are gone by the time I make my 30 mile trek east on any given morning.

With all of the hype building about the donut district, I decided to check out The Donut Shoppe on University since it carries its own hype.  (Cinnatis is next on my list). So I made sure one was in the chamber (kidding!) and headed out. For the review, click here! Ok,ok, just read below....

Hype?Uh, I think people need to get out more. Maybe 10 years ago before the "artisan donut" wave started, when this place blew chains like DD out of the water, I would understand it. But now? I don't think so.

First, I love the old school cash only policy. And the old (not young? PC police, help)ladies working the counter get an A plus.
I prefer "simple" donuts so the selection was good for me. I grabbed a cinnamon cake and was highly unimpressed. The chocolate covered glazed wasn't great either as the quality of the chocolate wasn't up to my donut elitist (Delitist? Donutist?)standards. Plus, the combo of glazed donut with chocolate was a bit much in the sweet department for me.

Finally, The plain glazed was a solid, classic glazed. Nice.

The donuts were incredibly cheap so I get the appeal if getting large quantities of donuts I would choose this place 100 times out of 100 over a chain. But these donuts are not in the same universe as a place like Good Dough and comparable shops in various other cities. Sorry, quality of ingredients matter. For me when it comes to a splurge food/calories, give me great and expensive over cheap and average every time.

I understand why Good Dough does not appeal to many as  probably 90 or 95% of Good Dough donuts have zero appeal to me and I doubt I would even like at all. (Give me a Donut Shoppe glazed over most of them every time). However, each month they usually have 1,maybe 2 that interest me and more often than not, they are excellent. Thus, it works out rather well for my limited consumption.

Cinnatis next month! (probably)

First, I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in my landslide victory in the Donut District mayoral race. I take my responsibilities very seriously. No donut will be left behind under my watch.

More importantly, the blueberry cake donut is back. In a month's menu that is filled with what looks like 7th round and UDFA's, the GD blueberry cake isn't just top 5 talent. When warm, we are talking a generational donut.

I want to add that with my new title, I am still a man of the people. If you see a guy in Good Dough wearing a Red Sox hat (or Pats in football season) please feel you can approach me even if it seems like I am conducting important donut duties. My mouth may be full, but my ears are always open.

I will leave you with a song.....

I found my Thrilllllllllllllllllll.........

It's a post like this makes my hours of work....all of my sacrifices....worth it. It makes my heart warmer than a fresh doughnut.

I too indulged  on Sunday Morning. It speaks to my amazing discipline that I was able to wait until day 6 to revisit the blueberry circle of perfection.
*** A warning to Good Dough virgins. There is a second blueberry doughnut this month....the shortbread. Mrs SMM suggested that we give that one a try and I relented even though her taste in doughnuts can be as questionable as her taste in men. Don't do it. Stick with the blueberry cake.***

Now back to what is important...the blueberry cake. I am not a poet so my words will not do it justice, but I will do my best to describe the experience. When I am eating that doughnut, the world becomes a different place. There are no disasters...no wars..MetroJacksonville can actually grasp pension concepts....ok,ok, that last one is a little unrealistic.

Tomorrow is National Doughnut Day. The fact that we actually have multiple "donut days" speaks to the greatness of our country.

I don't think shit hole countries even have one! Could be a correlation there or maybe...causation? I might need to grab a donut and ponder that one. I'm a learned person and that is what we do. Donuts and deliberation, baby.

The Mayor is back in Town....

I know there are Legions of you waiting for the latest updates...so just a little patience.  And, for those of you who sit at work, refreshing looking for my latest posts....understandable,but you need to get a life.

First the good news. Since I managed  to hit my favorite donut shop while in Charleston, I can expense the trip on the voters dime. Call it a fact finding mission. Whatever. Ah, politics.

Now, the better news. No, nothing as trivial as the US/NK summit being on. Real news. The Blueberry Cake is still on the Good Dough menu! And, they brought the Monte Cristo back for June. Damn, it is great to be me.

Now for the bad news. I really pushed the envelope in Charleston so I will need to ease back into the pastry department. However, I expect to resume full Mayoral duties soon.

Remember, my mouth may be full, but my ears are always open.

And the mayor has finally been to Sweet Theory. The official review......

First, I loved the interior....my kind of place. Slightly odd furniture set up...must be fun when it is busy.
Second, a very nice young lady helped me...A+ service so massive tip. (funny how that works)

I went with the intention of trying the donuts....and left with donuts....some kind of muffin/doughnut....coffee cake....and the biggest cinnamon roll in the history of pastrykind. Yeah, I hit it hard. Too hard. I could use the pastry box for curls.Thank god this place isn't in San Marco or instead of your lean mean mayor machine, I would be trying out for the Jags O-line.

But anyway....

I tried a chocolate frosted donut (very good) and a jam filled (out of this world).

The muffin/donut was very good as well...it was like a nice cake donut with cinnamon sugar in the shape of a muffin.

Cinnamon roll is obscenely good and may need to be outlawed.

And to top it off, the cinnamon coffee cake is incredible. (yes, I have a cinnamon fetish)

This place just doesn't get added to the donut passport, it needs its own passport. Unreal. It gets the Mayoral medal of honor.

Ok, so now I have to stare at a huge box of partially eaten pastries (I could eat for a week)while I prepare for workout of the day #2 which will now be extra painful. Screw whoever recommended this place ;D

So I've been hearing from friends and family along with this forum about this Good Dough Doughnut place. My gold standard for artisan doughnuts is this hole-in-a-wall in New York City that will remain nameless but next week I'll finally go over there and see how it stacks up to my go-to haunts. I'm a yeast doughnut kinda guy and I'll be looking for texture and proofing as well as creative flavors but I'll check out some cake ones for balance.

Locals and ex-pats tend to bemoan and be frustrated about what Jacksonville could have or should have but the city has made some great culinary strides over the past decade: better coffee, better steaks, better ramen, better rooftop bars, and I guess better doughnuts. I think you appreciate the changes more when you're living away because you're not exposed daily to the drip-drip-drip pace of progress

Anyway, there will be no losers in this competition and the big winner will be me. I'll probably check out Sweet Theory while I'm in town too.

Life is sometimes about difficult decisions and living with the consequences of our actions.
The Blueberry cake donut will not be on Good Dough's July menu and I haven't had any recently due to what will be referred to as the "Sweet Theory incident". Now I am running out of time.

This is a tough one. To BBC or not to BBC? That is the question. To make matters worse, next week they are offering a homemade "ice cream doughwich". Damn them.

And people probably think my life is pretty easy. How wrong they are.

With a heavy heart, I have to admit my failure as mayor of the Donut District as it appears we are back to one shop. However, as is common in government, pathetic performance just leads to being shuffled to a different department.

Thus, I have accepted the position of mayor of the coffee district!

Hey...I didn't get a harumph out of one of you.

Let's talk about something important. Such as...the August menu for Good dough. After A dud July, August has the long awaited return of the  French Toast! Or, for you over the top patriots, the Freedom Toast! Eat a couple of these, and it is mission accomplished, baby.
There is also a key lime pie that caught me eye. Yes, I am even a poet. Is there nothing I can't do?

As I age and grow up (ba ha ha ha), I have realized that I may be setting a bad example by talking about eating pastries all the time and I want people to eat responsibly. People must think I weigh 300 pounds. The key to life is to eat as many pastries as you can but don't look like you do. Thus, my donut updates will now include a health tip! Please....try to contain your excitement. As many know from my posts,  I obsess about keeping expenses low and investing. But what good is being wealthy if you are not healthy? Poet..or maybe a rapper?

When it comes to healthy, cost effective(we are talking crazy cheap),quick and keeping one full (besides helping weight loss, can be included with cost effective as well) , I find it hard to beat the bowl of oatmeal with chia seeds and a dash of cinnamon. I eat oatmeal almost every day. And, very flexible to add additional things for additional nutrition/taste so it doesn't get too boring.

Mrs SMM was feeling a little wild and  crazy this morning so we decided to head all the way to Sweet Theory. One cool part of the trip was that when  we were stopped at a light....I told her shhhhh.....look....Hipsters! She was fascinated!

But anyway...there was a decent line but nothing crazy. However, I could see there were only 2 cinnamon rolls left. So after delivering a silent F-Bomb, I started scouting the people ahead of me trying to determine what they were likely to order. Of course, being the analyst that I am, I also started calculating the odds of both being sold before it was our turn based upon number of customers and expected daily sales. I had just finished my formula but it was our turn and there was one left! Thank you pastry gods!

I know this is fascinating all ready, but it gets better. I know...hard to believe it gets better.
Behind us was this guy in a Yankee cap and he looked like he was eyeballing the cinnamon rolls too. When we put in our order I waited until the end and then gave a "oh, and a cinnamon roll" and gave the guy a little grin. Ha ha ha. The Sox swept their ass at Fenway last week and now the annoying Sox couple grabs the last cinnamon roll! Tough week, sucker.

That just put the 'Sweet' in Sweet Theory.

I have Big news. This is Huge. No, this is Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge news.

Good Dough has a Boston Creme donut this month. Since this is my favorite donut (no, not because of the name....well,maybe partially), I have been waiting for this day. I actually didn't believe it was true but they are real and they are spectacular.

I just treated two of them like the Jags just treated the Pats.

I may have "abilities". Let me back up and explain...A flashback if you will.
So there I was checking Good Dough's  Instagram post with their October menu, going thru the list to see if there was anything of note. I see Brown Sugar Pop Tart (interesting)....and then Apple Pie Bomb (Must try) and then under 'Doughnut Holes' I see...wait... Whaaaaa? DOUGHNUT HOLES?!?! This is new and I am about to lose my mind. Then I see they have Blueberry Cake Doughnut Holes and now I am going crazy. My wife is getting concerned as I am having trouble speaking.

Now back to the present and my abilities. I may have willed this to happen. I find their Blueberry cake donut legendary and to have them in "hole form" has been a dream of mine (yeah, I have odd dreams). Also, I have a burn scar on my arm but now am wondering if my parents had a tattoo removed as it is in the same spot as Eleven's 011 and I think it may have been a number. Now I am concerned I may end up in the upside down.
Is it getting cold in here? I better check the

Well, I went to Good Dough this morning and bought doughnuts for the office. My brown sugar poptart is sitting on my desk, waiting for me. My coworkers were very happy to see me this fine Friday morning.

I hope you have a small office as that can get pricey in a hurry at that place.

And unless you are waiting for coffee to finish brewing, you lost me at "doughnut is sitting on my desk waiting for me". I haven't been that mystified by a post since someone else posted about the city pension.

We have a donut shutdown. This is serious.
Let’s talk the Town Center location as I am outraged. Evidently, Good Dough is offering other pastry options now including cinnamon rolls. But only at the Town Center. WTF?!?!

This is wrong on so many levels and I am pretty upset. In protest, I went to Sweet Theory today and bought too many items again. I ended up making a second pot of coffee and..well...lets just say it wasn’t pretty.

I have only been a few times but my experience has been amazing every time. Nicest people work there and great quality. Today I tried a French Toast donut which was outstanding. Of course, I could never walk out of that place without a cinnamon roll. Pastry porn.

So I needed a donut fix and since I still have GD under protest, I went to Sweet Theory. Unfortunately, at their prices, I found all of their donuts to be substandard so I drove to the Mandarin Dunkin Donuts and got a dozen at a nice price.

Just kidding.

I actually have a major local announcement. You may want to sit down as this is yuuuuuuge and could put Jax on the map. Dare I say game changer? I have a new entry in the SMM Donut Case of Fame. This is not something I take lightly as there is only one other current member.I got an Apple Pie donut today and this is the second time I have had one and once again it was so incredible I have skipped the usual formal application/review process and expedited the vote. It was unanimous.

It is official. The Sweet Theory Apple Pie is in the Case.

Did you ever try the donuts at the Donut Shop in Arlington?  If so, how did you like them?  Years ago I lived in Arlington and liked those donuts, bear claws, twists, etc.  Now I don't eat donuts, don't live in Arlington, and have a few fond memories to help me along.  Never liked Dunkin'.

Speaking as an old-timer (born/raised in Jax)...and remembering how good the donuts used to be at Dixie Donuts in Riverside back in the day, imho The Donut Shop in Arlington tastes the closest to those wonderful Dixies I remember.  I mean the one back in the early 1960s, that my sister used to get to take to her office.  (She would always save me a glazed twist!)  There was an incarnation of Dixie Donuts right there in the original spot back in the mid 1980s, that our office frequently availed itself of - sorry for ending a sentence with a preposition there.  They were pretty darned good, too.  But yeah, for me the mack daddy to is The Donut Shop.  They have Apple 'uglies' that are wonderful.  To be fair, I have not tried Good Dough or Sweet Theory.  I think I'm too jaded to give them a fair shake.

So of course I have been to the original location in Duck, NC! (yes, I know I have a problem).

It was a long time ago so I am sketchy on remembering the details.   Maybe it was the hype, but I think I thought they were good not great and I found a different donut shop on the OBX that I liked better. (Ok, I have a big problem).
They are a good alternative to the traditional donut place with all of the options, though. And, for it is worth, the women with me liked them more than I did. Dating tip from SMM: hang out at donut shops

SMM. So I'm thinking dough nuts. Now I'm thinking the munchies, which leads me to this question: What's your favorite pot stock pick?

I try not to invest in any company where I feel their product could have too many negative consequences. Profiting from poor decisions by others just doesn't seem worth it to me. I prefer to concentrate my portfolio on companies that I feel have a positive effect on society. It helps me sleep at night.

Ha ha ha ha ha. Wow....I give myself credit for typing that with a straight face.

Actually,  I have a personal policy of not posting any individual stock recommendations and will not bore people(I do enough of that here) with the reasons why.

As the legions that follow this thread are well aware, I have been boycotting Good Dough due to their decision of only selling cinnamon rolls at their Town Center location. Well...after deep deliberation, I have decided to end the boycott.  I can't say for sure why..maybe it is my maturity(no, that can't be it)...but whatever the reasons, it is over.

Now...I should also mention...and this is an amazing coincidence....the Blueberry Cake is back! Shortly after open, I confirmed that it is as good as ever. And, just to be sure...I got another.  I am not ready to call it case-of-fame worthy...but it is under consideration. And, if anyone is about to bring up the Donut Shoppe blueberry cake as a comparison....just stop. Don't embarrass yourself.

On a side note, there is evidently happy hour pricing in the morning on some of their regular flavors.

With D-Day approaching....you know, National Donut Day, I thought I would bring up the latest menu changes. What? Were you thinking of something else? Huh. Let me think...Nope...All I got is Donut Day. Can't think of anything else that is remotely close in importance.

The latest GD menu is out and while the Blueberry Cake is gone (give me a sec...need to compose myself) it is the French Toast that replaces it which is outstanding. Now, I am not saying it is Blueberry level...but then again, what is?
And, in even more exciting news (you may want to sit down).....Boston Creme is back. And it is back big.

I think my donut work is finally paying off. The blueberry cake donut is back all ready! Clearly, I have had such an impact on the Jax donut scene that my posts are driving sales and subsequent menu changes. Now I know how Oprah must have felt with her impact on book sales. Considering her weight issues, we may have the donut thing in common too.

In other news, I forgot to provide the update that I finally went to Cinnati’s. The place was huge and I was a little over whelmed. I wanted to try some pastries too but with so many choices, I panicked and just got some donuts. As with the Donut Shoppe, I found them good not great but outstanding value and of course much better than a chain like DD. If I lived at the beach I am sure I would be there too often, but doubt I make that drive again. I would say my favorite was the glazed croissant.

Sweet Theory continues to be the runaway leader for overall quality.

Before it became Cinnotti's it was Arnot's.  They used to be smaller and on 1st St N.  The last time I ate there it didn't seem to be as good as it was in the earlier time.  I think their pastry is better than the donuts.

And speaking of doughnuts, Pumpkin Doughnut Season will soon be upon us.  I used to love the little pumpkin doughnuts from Albertson's bakery, back in the late 1970's.  Since then, I've only tried Dunkin's punkins (O, The Shame!) and was not impressed.  All I could taste was the oil and my fingers were left excessively greasy as well.  I've never joined the fall frenzy of reserving and then lining up around the building for Cinotti's pumpkin doughnuts. (Especially when their glazed doughnuts have a weird texture and cornstarch-y taste).  What's everyone's verdict on pumpkin doughnuts - are they worth the hype? Whose are the best?

The Cinnamon Roll Bomb is finally back. I have no idea how long it has been...seems like Jags back to back winning seasons long. Ok, it hasn’t been THAT long...but you get the idea.

Why is this important you may ask? Actually, you would only ask that if you have never had one before. I recommend you change that as soon as possible.

Excuse me while I go measure my freezer to see how many Cinnamon Roll Bombs I can fit since I cannot go this long again without a supply. Screw that....excuse me while I had to Lowe’s to buy a 2nd freezer. Wait...can you freeze cinnamon roll bombs? Siri....

Apparently I am a little late to the game, but we may have a game changer. Good Dough has been testing their version of a CroNut  on a limited basis. Due to extreme Holiday indulgence, I am taking it easy to start the new year so I have not braved the reported line to try one. But with the  described lighter, layered texture, SMM interest is high.
