JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The young and young at heart cruised up and down Main Street last month in their hot rods and classic cars.  The turnout for the first Historic Springfield Main Street cruise was lot bigger than expected.  So big, that organizers are going to make it a monthly event.  "A number of them just didn't believe that it would be that big.  So now everybody is talking about it.  Everybody wants to come. We're actually getting emails and Facebook messages from all over the Southeast," said even organizer John Wells.

It looks like this cruise won't be a one hit wonder.  Cruisers are hitting the Main Street strip again this Saturday night and every fourth Saturday of the month.  "It's a real cruise.  It's not just a car show or parade,.  It's a real cruise where you can get out and drive your cars," says Wells.

Businesses along Main Street are benefiting from the Saturday night crowds and catering to them.  Uptown Market on 4th and Main has comfort food from the 50's & 60's on the menu.  "We have root beer floats, hamburgers, hot dogs, and chili fries. Things that represent what the era was all about," said Uptown partner Eddy Escriba.

The owner of Joseph's Pizza on Main, a local favorite for 50-years, says she saw customers she hadn't seen in years.  "We all are very happy that they started this again.  It brought back some good memories for everybody," said Susie Bateh.

Even Jeff Wells, the owner of a speed shop all the way across town says the cruise is helping his sales.  "Just people coming in and talking about it and doing some extra work on their car. Getting that extra part.  That chrome piece or what have you just to flash it up a little bit."

The cruise is Saturday, July 28 beginning at 5pm and every fourth Saturday of the month on Main Street between 1st and 12th streets.  It's free. Organizers says there will be plenty of food for sale and entertainment including the local bluegrass band "Grandpa's Cough Medicine."

Growing up, some of my fondest memories were hanging out at Super Shops on Saturday nights.

I have worked restoring cars for most of my adult life.  When I graduated college, I worked for a few magazines in the automotive industry and later was a partner in a company that put on car shows nationwide and a partner in a video production company that made car and skateboard video magazine DVDs.  I talk about unnecessary road building as being a bad thing in this community, and I greatly believe that to be true... but I have always been a car guy at heart ever since my grandfather (who owned a farm in Sebring) took me to the 12 Hours of Sebring when I was 8 years old.  From then on, I was hooked.

The Main Street Cruise has gotten me fired up about doing something again.

BTW in addition to places like Uptown, Waffa and Mikes, etc being open.... On The Fly, Mike B's, Super Food Truck and Gourmet Aviator food trucks will all be out b/w 4th and 5th Streets.  Come on out, this will really be a great time.

I just dropped our 1950 English Ford Prefect off at Joe's to be detailed! Cannot wait to cruise tomorrow night!

Those old Prefects were way ahead of their time!  They got something like 35-40 miles per gallon in a day when many of the cars were becoming heavier with longer wheelbases and the cubic displacement of the motors were getting larger.

Last month there were so many people on the sidewalks you actually had to say "excuse me" to get by.  On a Saturday night no less.  Main Street.  Springfield.

Huge.

We've been busy this morning - tent is up for the bands (thanks, John and Lorrie Wells!) and space is blocked off for the food trucks in the grass area at the Main Street Car Wash.  Silas Jones and Michael Trautman have been wonderful sponsors of this event - neither is charging anyone for the use of their properties and they have been incredibly accomodating.

Two bands tonight - Grandpa's Cough Medicine from 5:30 to 7:30 and the 77ds from about 8 to 10.  Tres Leches will be at 4th and Main selling delicious items from their menu and helping SAMBA raise money for the bands.

We just learned that Joseph's Pizza, farther down Main but an enthusiastic supporter of the cruise, has pledged 10% of tonight's proceeds to help us pay for the entertainment.  Go eat some pizza, people!

Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting our local merchants.

As John Wells, says:  Cruise whatcha got, have fun, and be safe!

What an amazing evening.  I don't know when I've had so much fun!

(I mean what is more fun than a little kid on a fire truck?  Me, Faith, Joan and Pat!!!)

The cars, the people, the open merchants (City Kidz soft serve is the BEST), the fried pickles from the food vendors, the bands, the people actually walking the block between 7th and 8th, Dan in a balcony, pretty ladies in classic apparel.

I heard that folks came from as far away as Alabama.

This cruise was nothing short of genius.  John Wells, Chris Parrish, and all who helped them, thank you for the fun, for bring folks in from all over to walk the sidewalks of Main, and especially for filling the neighborhood with joy and laughter.

wow, I was quite impressed and did have a bunch of fun.  Had invited a couple of other people from other parts o town to attend with me, but they lost out.  Great event.  The people everywhere gave me a glimpse of what (was) or could be again:)

It was AWESOME!!! Thanks everyone for coming out to Springfield on a beautiful July night.

We're already working on the next one - August 25th, 6 p.m. until.....??????

More hot cars, more hot bands, great food and all kinds of people hanging out together and having a good time.

I went Saturday night. Very good turnout, at least 1500 people (count the ones in the cars, too).

Needs to start earlier, maybe noon, and let people see the cars in the light of day. Could then go until evening.

Went to Uptown Market (3rd and M<ain). It was busy right up to and then past the official "close" (9 pm).

(I got there at 8:40 pm.)

Eddie made me a "Smashburger" and it was perfect (yes I was hungry).

This could grow into a very successful Springfield event.

P.S. There were some unbelievable cars out there. One guy had the loudest engine I have ever heard.
You could suffer permanent hearing damage if you are not careful around some of these cars.

P.S.S. How about getting a local mechanic/engine shop/parts store to sponsor it?

Thanks for the positive feedback, Musicman! This time of year it's awfully hot at noon and there's a lot of light between 6 and 8, so I think we'll stick with evening hours for now - we may reevaluate in the fall. We would LOVE to have a sponsor - we're entertaining thousands of people with virtually NO money right now. Please PM me if you have any contacts to pass on.
We'll be cruising again on August 25th!

I think that starting in the early evening is perfect, at least during the summer months. Of course, if this event is held during the winter months when there's less daylight, it may need to start around 3ish for folks to be able to walk around and see the vehicles on display. Otherwise, it's just great the way it is

Thanks, Springfielder!  I sure did enjoy seeing you riding on the firetruck! Next time he shows up I'm going to take a break from working and catch a ride myself.

I agree that we may need to start earlier in the fall and winter.  This is a new event so we'll just have to see what happens.  I'm already working on entertainment for the next couple of months and can confirm that the food trucks will be back on August 25th - On the Fly, Super Food Truck, Gourmet Aviator and Mike Bs have all checked in and they all did well and had a great time!

Mark your calendar for August 25th, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and please show up hungry.

While waiting for the next cruise, eat plenty of pizza from Joseph's:

http://josephsitalian.com/

they bought the music, you buy the pizza!

And when you go in, tell them you are here because they support the cruise.

CORPORATE SPONOR:

How about Gate Petroleum?  Didn't old Mayor Peyton often pay lip service to the concept of helping
downtown and Springfield?  This seems like a 'no brainer' to me.

It is getting bigger every month.  People everywhere.  Its like one big long block party from 1st to 12th.  Hey, those empty lots on Main Street finally found a purpose!!!  Who'd a guessed.
