The Real Shanty Town Pub

Located at the corner of 6th and Main, Shanty Town Pub is a truly unique Springfield neighborhood bar. The following photos capture a typical night inside and out.

There was a good turnout tonight. It's my last night in town for awhile so I had to stop by, i've known these guys for way too long to be swayed by the negative comments on the newspaper message boards.

I can't wait for the weather to cool off again, I miss the campfires in the backyard.

Ian and Mary anne are to be commended for creating such a great place.  Love the people... love the vibe... LOVE the beer! 8)
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

love the plumbers crack in photo #3.

I also agree that Shanty Town Pub will outlive any negative publicity in the TU (seriously, it's the TU....).  It's a great local bar run by locals, patronized by locals.  And they have great beer.  What more do you need?

Anybody commenting on Shantytown on the TU board was never going to go there anyway. They are too worried about tea parties.

The place is a cess pool. I can't believe the TU has opened their doors to the type of hatred and racism that goes on there.

There is no way for us to live down the past.

But we still need too. We've got houses and condo's to sell and they can't all go to non-natives like myself who don't have preconceived notions and who don't think JAX is that unsafe overall.

(See the real numbers here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

Guess what, Miami was the murder capital of Florida in 07!)

I've heard rumor that nurses at Shand's Proton Center are telling patients that they shouldn't rent in Springfield, that it's unsafe. That is digging into the success of 3rd and Main and hurting people who were coming to depend on renting garage apts to the visiting patients. Those are detrimental effects due to people's perceptions.

My belief is we should smack people with boards (from historic homes) until they all say Springfield is safe!  ;D

I don't frequent Shanty but I'm glad to have it in the neighborhood and wish them continued success.

The "backyard" fires are nice in the cooler months.

i've known Ian for a while. He knows how to treat his patrons and gets quality entertainment in the doors. I don't get out as much as I used to, but I know this is a great place to hang.

This is to Ian from a Man of color that KNOWS Springfield probably moreso than anyone in this forum or anyone who has lived there less than 10 or 15 years.

Keep doing what you are doing and hold on; better things are coming not only for you, your family, and Shanty Town, but also for the Springfield area.  I lived in Jax during my 20 year Navy career numerous times and though I no longer live there, Jax is my heart and forever my home.  I used to frequent Springfield quite often in the late 70's, 80's and up to the mid 90's, and it was a horrendous place back then.  Thugs, drug addicts, drug dealers, alcoholics, male and female prostitutes, etc.  Since leaving Jax in 1995, each time I have returned, Springfield, and Jax as a whole has changed, and for the better.  The last time I visited, which was early this year, Springfield looked fantastic, especially compared to the past.  I laud and applaud what the citizens of Springfield, the leadership of Jacksonville and others have and are doing to make Springfield a great and pleasant place to live.

Don't give up hope Ian, and others who reside or frequent historic Springfield.  It is truly on the "up and up" and a few years from now, Springfield's demonic and dark past will be buried, gone and hopefully forgotten, we will always be aware of Springfield's past to not forget that part of its history, but we must forget what was and move on.

Hang in there Ian, and I am regretfully sorry that this happened to your beautiful establishment and business.  Better times are coming so hold on.

Thanks for the inspirational words heights! It's good to hear this from someone who knows the neighborhood past and who doesn't live in the area anymore. Much better than some of the pessimistic comments (the one's peppered with if and maybe) I hear on this board sometimes.

I've been thinking about signing up for the paper forums and posting when I see the horrid comments on there, but I'm going to post back just as horrid comments directed at those who posted them.
