fantastic column today.  that's so funny.  but it is also so sad that our leaders think so little of us that they are doing this.

Government by chain letter.  It fits the Peyton administration perfectly.  Qualifications who needs them? Experience, what for?  Following the rules? Heck no, just rewrite them.  It's all about lets make a deal.  and boy has the deal making been hot and heavy, only to be rivaled by "I love Brad" letters.  As Suzanne Jenkins quipped recently,  you do what you gotta do.  Right.....Wonder what she got out of this.  A blessing for her run at Supervisor of Elections?  Sell your soul, that's the ticket, do what you gotta do.......for yourself, damn the city and it's future.

Peyton is just doing what has become the political norm. He has learned by example from the top. Be the decider, be unresponsive to the public, lead the city into oblivion, insure that your dynasty continues.

The town of New Braunfels, TX provides an interesting juxtaposition to Jacksonville.

New Braunfels soon will have a permanent planning director in place for the first time since last summer.

Shannon Mattingly was hired Wednesday to head the city’s planning department, becoming its first non-interim director since Frank Robbins was asked to retire in July of 2007.

Mattingly currently is working as the director of planning and regional services for the Central Texas Council of Governments and previously served as city manager and planning director in Leander.

She officially will begin working in New Braunfels on June 30.

“We feel very good about hiring Shannon,” said New Braunfels City Manager Mike Morrison. “She has a really good background in transportation and land-use, which are two things that are going to be an asset to us as we move forward.”

Mattingly, who wasn’t available for comment Wednesday, holds both a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in urban planning from Texas A&M University.

She will take over for Bob Kinsey, who had served as interim director since August.

“Bob and the staff have done an excellent job in helping us continue to move forward,” said Morrison.

Kinsey will continue working for the city as a building official, a position he held prior to becoming interim director.

Shannon Mattingly Biography

• Current director of planning and regional services for the Central Texas Council of Governments

• Former city manager and planning director for the City of Leander

• Has bachelor’s degree in political science, master’s in urban planning from Texas A&M University.

But is she as smart as a whip?  Stop worrying Lunican, there's a rumor going around that everything is under control.

I heard that rumor as well. Haven't been able to verify it yet though.
