Nate Monroe Moves to The Tributary
« on: January 24, 2025, 11:29:23 PM »
Mixed feelings... hate to see Nate leave the T-U as I felt he was an anchor there keeping them on life support.  But, glad (1) he is staying in Jax and (2) most importantly, he will return to investigative journalism right here in Jax.  Never liked that Gannett moved him into being a Florida-wide state columnist.

Congrats Nate and we look forward to seeing more great columns and stories from you!  Suggestion: Start with investigating JTA's U2C fiasco  ;D.

P.S. Classy of the T-U to let you run a farewell column with a link to your new job.  Sadly, I take this as another step in the T-U's step-back from mainstream journalism in the local arena.  Keep hoping they hold on as a daily paper but see storm clouds brewing.  Gannett is acting more like a Wall Street corporate owner, which it is, not one in love with the profession of journalism and its importance to a civil society and accountable government.  How killing the goose that lays golden eggs makes sense is beyond me.

....On Monday, I'll officially be the executive editor of The Tributary, a nonprofit investigative newsroom based right here in Jacksonville. It is, at the moment, a small organization but one that has nonetheless had an outsized impact with its work on local government and politics, from issues like redistricting to deaths at the Duval County jail. Close readers may have noticed my citing to some of its work in past columns.

For me, it's a chance to get back into investigative and public-service reporting in Jacksonville and in Florida — The Tributary's bread and butter — and to help foster a new generation of journalists. Part of the appeal, too, is that The Tributary views news organizations like the Times-Union not as competitors but partners.

This is probably the best way possible for the T-U to "keep" Nate and the work he does so well. The conglomerate owners of local media are investing less in investigative and longform content, but are actually willing to partner with nonprofit newsrooms to suit their purposes. It allows editors to appease their corporate overlords by licensing content while outsourcing the dead-end leads and the old fashioned shoe leather reporting. I expect at some time before the end of the year, Nate will have a T-U byline (or maybe more accurately, a buy-line) to break up the their daily stenographing from city hall and the sheriff's office.

This is also great for the city to have a watchdog on patrol once again, and it seems that the Tributary is really going to elevate their investigative game. I agree the U2C has to be the easy target, with the insane sums that are being committed to a concept that seems like it's still in the back-of-the-napkin sketch phase. I've lived here just 3 years, and already I can tell that the JTA as a whole stinks more than the fish market. Accountability might just be making a comeback.

And that is quite a gesture to not only give Nate the farewell column, but also to let him announce his new opportunity and link to it.
