LaVilla rail project awarded $1.25 million grant
« on: September 19, 2024, 08:10:00 AM »
Quote

The City of Jacksonville has been awarded a $1.25 million grant from the Build America Bureau, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation. This funding will support management of the LaVilla Transit Innovation and Equity Project, an effort to revitalize key transportation assets by transforming existing facilities into a cohesive, multifunctional transit hub in downtown Jacksonville. Specifically, the City of Jacksonville will explore restoring the Prime Osborn as the central rail station that it has served in the past, and nearby transit-oriented development options that bring new passenger rail connections to Jacksonville.

So, the City of Jacksonville was awarded this grant? JTA has nothing to do with this?

Mayor's Office was the lead. There's strong desire to return passenger rail back to LaVilla and downtown. JTA is supportive but ultimately we don't need JTA to lead getting intercity rail back to the core. JTA doesn't own the tracks and can't operate Amtrak, Brightline or something similar. So time to get those who do in a room together to figure this thing out.

I really hope they get Amtrak back to the Prime Osborne. The current Amtrak station is so bleak and disconnected from other transit for such a large city...

Where does "moving Amtrak back to the Prime Osborn" rank in the list of no-brainer projects the city needs to complete to help bring vibrancy to downtown?

I'm not sure where it ranks, but this grant was necessary to get things started from the city's standpoint. Unfortunately, all the talk about bringing Amtrak back in the past, commuter rail studies, etc. haven't moved us one step closer to actually getting the station back operational. This does.

Could not be more excited for this. Just wish it would happen faster! (not to bring this up but) Would the election have any real effect on this study or the speed at which this could happen?

This has been a primary goal of this site since its launch many years ago… with Ocklawaha leading the way…
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Seeing something about Miami to Chicago coming back through Amtrak? Assuming that would include stop in Jax. Sounds like the perfect opportunity to get in the room and start talking about bringing Amtrak back to this beautiful train station.

This is what was conceptually proposed; Miami-Chicago was ranked by Amtrak as the second highest-impact long range route that could be launched.

Goals would be to bring both Amtrak and Brightline to the station. Amtrak first and then Brightline.

Whatever we do, we can’t loose sight of future needs. Many Amshack stations were built with a single track, maybe two at best. Clifford Lane in Jacksonville was no different. Then someone realized trains could be split or added to both coasts of Florida in Jacksonville. Further, storage mail and bulk mail required a last minute siding addition. Dining cars running short on ice or other food items required restocking, add a ramp to another track. In the end Amtrak cuts eliminated most of these needs, but what if?

Any station revival downtown needs to consider these items (=jobs) plus mixing Amtrak, Brightline and any JTA commuter runs. Imagining arrivals, departures and trains held out for future arrivals and departures it is imperative that we insist on space for at least 2 tracks each.

Down the road, between Palatka and DeLand Amtrak has been given ownership rights. Sunrail currently running Poinciana- DeLand is but a hairs breath from reaching Lakeland. Can Tampa, Palatka or Jacksonville be that far behind?

Add the dream of restoring Jacksonville- Miami via the FEC RY (Brightline), has anyone considered that BL cars and Amtrak cars are compatible? Another huge what if requiring space to switch things out.

The 800 pound gorilla in the room is the history of the site. Throughout the 1800’s until 1919 the platforms flooded continuously. The 1919 fix was to build a pedestrian subway at ground level then backfill the entire yards with 14’ of compacted earth. It worked! Then come the convention center, passenger trains were gone and the city wanted a showplace at the end of Water Street. The Park Street/Lee Street viaduct was lowered and shortened. The FEC RY freight tracks lowered back to 1890’s level, and everybody has forgotten that flood delayed freight doesn’t complain as much as flood delayed passengers. The viaduct or flood zone simply must be fixed.

Thanks Ock! All good things that a station area plan should consider. Especially with the potential of UF's proposed Jax campus going on a portion of the property where the convention center parking lot and exhibition hall now stand. It will be critical to not screw the pooch on this property by handing over too much land to UF, to the point where it screws up rail support operations. From what I understand, Amtrak also desires to keep the Amshack. So at a minimum, we'd be looking at two Jacksonville Amtrak stations.

The viaduct or flood zone simply must be fixed.

McCoys Creek is being reconstructed now to alleviate flooding between the river and Lackwanna. Hopefully, this multimillion dollar COJ investment will help.

Excellent Lakelander! Imagine an Amtrak train from NY or Chicago arriving with cars to both coasts of Florida. 12 cars split into 5 West Coast and 7 East coast destinations. Amtrak hands off 7 cars to Brightline for their next southbound. Likewise an Amtrak local arrives from Tampa via Florida’s neglected Ocala mainline and meets a northbound headed to both Chicago and New York… We need to consider critical switching space which is what made JACKSONVILLE TERMINAL famous in the first place.

Anyone believing that those days are a past need should study Europes trains that regularly add and subtract cars. Fact is, Amtrak no longer performs these moves in the East but their number one most popular train, THE EMPIRE BUILDER, runs from Chicago to Seattle daily. Oh, and Chicago to Portland daily… You’ve got it , Spokane, Washington is the site of splits and additions. If anything Jacksonville historically invented this concept. Routes north and west include Savannah-NYC, Waycros-Atlanta, Waycross-Birmingham, Jacksonville-New Orleans. Going south they include the Florida East Coast to Miami, CSX Orlando-Miami and CSX Jax-Ocala-Tampa. The combinations are endless unless we are asleep at the throttle.
