A recently released poll of Duval County voters reveals support for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, and the proposed one cent sales tax increase supporting Duval County Public Schools – and a mixed bag for Mayor Lenny Curry. What does this mean for Jacksonville's political future in November 2020 and beyond?

The changing electoral dynamics of regions like Jacksonville is going to be for the Republicans the chickens that come home to roost and subsequently bite them in the ass. Republican officials have been very successful for years in their strategy of "packing and cracking" congressional districts packing a few districts exclusively with people of color and a liberal electorate and creating many more districts with a mixture of Republican and Democratic voters but with them all arranged specifically to guarantee having a conservative voting majority.

As a result, these districts have politicians not just campaigning in a way that can afford to totally pander to conservatives and ignore any left-leaning voters, but doubling down on this rhetoric since the only opposition that endangers their chances are coming from the far-right.

But the fact that more right-leaning voters are moving away from these increasingly purple districts hopefully this leads to politicians listening to and voting on policies reflecting their entire electorate if exclusively for the sake of their electoral viability. Imagine that - politicians now governing more towards the will of the people as opposed to the will of their ideology.
