America's middle class is disappearing from cities
« on: May 13, 2016, 12:15:12 PM »
The American middle class is losing ground in metropolitan areas across the country, affecting communities from Boston to Seattle and from Dallas to Milwaukee. From 2000 to 2014 the share of adults living in middle-income households fell in 203 of the 229 U.S. metropolitan areas examined in a new Pew Research Center analysis of government data. The decrease in the middle-class share was often substantial, measuring 6 percentage points or more in 53 metropolitan areas, compared with a 4-point drop nationally.

Or import undocumented cheap labor...
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

Of course it is shrinking, we don't make anything anymore.

We make everything.  We just hire indonesians to work for 20 cents per hour in off shore factories.

Because: Unions = Evil.

So lets kill them and the middle class simultaneously.

those are not the jobs we want to keep here anyways.  We shouldn't want the jobs going to indonesia, we should want the ones going to Germany.

Wages and resulting costs, regulations, and taxes are the three things that push jobs offshore.  How do you solve those?

So wages, regulations, and taxes are lower in Germany than they are in the US?  Who knew.

We tore down the tax and tariff codes that penalized US corporations for offshoring the labor.

Unsurprisingly, manufacturers took advantage of it.

When you screw labor, you screw the economy.

It just take thirty years before you see the results.  Which we are now seeing.

No. What happened is not that we changed anything so much as that the rest of the world made major changes and we didn't respond.

The tax codes that penalized US corporations for offshoring 30, 40, or 50 years ago were that other countries had higher tax rates than we did, so you raised your tax bill by offshoring. Now other places have lower tax rates than we do, so you lower your tax bill by offshoring. What happened is that everybody else lowered their income tax rates much faster, and generally lower, than we did.

The changes regarding "tariffs" are linked to the tax changes above. What those foreign countries did to enable them to lower their income tax rates is that they imposed consumption taxes (VAT/GST) for 20-40% of their total tax bite. How this affects tariffs is that you get to levy a consumption tax on all imports when they land, and you get to refund embedded consumption taxes on all exports when they ship, and it doesn't count as a tariff so they get to do it even where there is a free trade agreement in place.

So it's not what we did so much as what everybody else did and we didn't respond.

To provide some perspective, when Bill Clinton got through raising tax rates, we were among the lowest in the developed world, but when George W. Bush got through lowering tax rates, we were among the highest in the developed world. That's how quickly everybody else changed their tax structures.

No, they're virtually the same.  Germany's effective tax rate is actually a little higher:

So tell us again how wages, regulations, and taxes are pushing jobs offshore.

Rofl... really?  Someone has a count of the ... uncountable?  Are their turnstiles in the ranchers front yards?  Sensors in the Rio Grande?

Awesome... Thanks Obama... ::) ;)
