Arash Im really looking forward to this years speakers.  Is there one that sticks out for you?

I'm looking forward to Peter Rummell and Mark McCombs.

I think Rummell is going to speak about developing healthy communities and McCombs is ROBOTS!

Yeah, there's confidence in this year's event.

Not that there was a lack of it in the previous years but TEDx is more comfortable in their stride. The rearrangement of the stage and audience seems to have opened things up.

People are facing each other, plus more lights seem to be up. Less like a movie theater and more like a thoughtful town hall.

This was the young man who was murdered by Michael Dunn for listening to loud music.

John Phillips was wearing a bullet proof vest through the trial because of the death threats he was receiving.

He's discussing the mythology of one of our "origin stories".

but no boring and so respectful of the audience. Kind, calm and considerate.

but he reveals enough information for everyone in the room to think "oh, yeah...we were obviously taught bulls shit in school".

His most striking line is "America has a love affair with Indians..." but it's not poised as a positive. The american love affair is of fantasy. He says, we make the "historic" Indian anything we want him/her to be but at the expense of present day Indians and actual history.

So far, everyone has received a standing ovation.

On Andrew Jackson...he didn't delve too deep in the atrocities of this president. Although, he opened the door of exploration by saying the "trail of tears" shouldn't be considered as an isolated event.

My question, when do we change the name of our city?

boiled down...Rummell is asking us to think of communities as places to live as "easy" and healthy, with a culture that encourages engaging with others. 

But, the part that may be of the most interest is his challenge to integrate "generations". To create environments where the old mix with the young, singles mix with couples...etc.

Rummell, started out a bit nervous but he's becoming more comfortable as his talk progresses. The nervous voice has given way to a clear, engaging and interesting talk.

So, this talk all comes down to a sort of pitch for what was formerly called "Healthy Town USA"...I think.

You know arash, we've spent a lot of time on this site talking about his new project, Healthy Town: http://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2014-oct-peter-rummells-healthy-town-site-plan-released but there are ideas that he's expressing here that give him depth and frankly are more interesting.  I really like his discussion on intergenerational relationships.

I'm forever cynical of all development projects. I hope it ends up being the ideal.
