I thought it was garnett for FSU, to balance the orange (Acosta) and blue (Main Street) bridges downtown. My guess is that it was due to be painted, not a special paint job just to change the color.

The timing of the repainting definitely suggests it was chosen for the Bulls, however, as they made a big sensation that year. The Acosta Bridge was actually yellow, not orange. But either way, the Mathews' garnet color does goes back to FSU: the Bulls adopted it in tribute to the Seminoles (they also incorporated the Gators's orange and the Bulldogs' black and silver).

Notice in the Mathews picture, no center barrier wall?
