I was working at the VA before the job here in Landstuhl. Not much going on there besides the college. There's a nice museum and butterfly exhibit I enjoyed visiting there.

Gainesville is obviously a college oriented town, but they have definitely made huge investments to improve QOL for all residents, which in turn has led to growth in the technology industry there. Companies have been started by students (Grooveshark) or employ current or former students (Sharklet Technologies, Eclipse aviation, mindtree, etc..) are creating an environment for young professionals. Nightlife is largely student dominated, but the dining scene is full of unique places not necessarily geared towards the 18-22 year old palate or budget.

I'm biased, but I think Gainesville is a great town.

I have season tickets for Gator football and we park in DT G-ville (near Main and University) and ride the shuttle to the stadium.  DT G-ville is pretty small yet compact and walkable and very lively.  I'll be spending my retirement years in DT Jax but I can definitely see the appeal of living in one of the new condo buildings in DT G-ville. Go Gators.

Great video...

But, ALL college towns of this ilk are bastions of liberalism! That's part of what makes a college town. College of Charleston/Charleston is the blue eye of a very red state. Athens GA comes to mind as well.

I can't begin to tell you how much I love this town. And they are getting ready for a real explosion with the push UF is making. There is a game-changing economic development initiative going on that isn't just talk, and Innovation Square, Depot Park, Cade Museum, etc. looks to be just the start of things.

But that bastion of liberalism is severely tempered by a professional class increasingly recognizing the dangers and craziness of political correctness that disallows honest and open discussion, or acknowledges the primary role of personal responsibility. Hopefully Gainesville can help re-invigorate the center-left of the Democrats and rescue them from the craziness.

It's a great North Florida town, one Central Florida is always trying to claim.

99% of college professors are liberal and they teach liberalism to their students, so no surprise there. I know from personal experience. The joke about freedom of debate and expression on college campuses is a fraud and a joke. Speak anything other than liberalism in the classroom and your grades will suffer accordingly. Regurgitate their liberalism back to the professors and you will do well. That is not the definition of a classic education, but it is the current reality.

Please provide the facts that support this assertion.

Landstuhl ? Then you are not too far away (by US standards) from where I live . Actually pass by there (on the A6) on my way to and from my Job in Luxembourg twice a week.

There's a new show on CMT called 'Gainesville' that will debut on Aug 20th. Many of the G-ville locals aren't pleased the way the city is perceived on the show.  "CMT seems to have found the dimmest people in the entire town to give a show to" said a commenter. It's also perceiving G-ville as just a college party town.
