several of these bridges are slated for replacement in the next few years...that includes Newnan/Market @ Hogans Creek, Liberty @ Coast Line, Hecksher @ Sisters Creek (mentioned in article), and University @ Arlington River....and of course the Mathews Bridge is undergoing major rehab currently.

It's nice to see the raw data on these bridges. We don't need another Minneapolis bridge disaster to bring attention to this important issue. These bridges are old and falling apart. It only takes overlooking one crack.

Looking at the DOT's Work Program page for Duval County - http://www.d2wpph.com/PDF/Duval%20Citzen's%20Plan%2011-9-2012.pdf - I see the bridges tufsu1 mentioned, plus some others:

Mathews - current work, Fender Work 2014
Main Street - various work in 2014 and 2015
Edison @ McCoys - replace 2018
Newnan @ Hogan's - replace 2016
Market @ Hogan's
Heckscher @ Sisters - replace 2014
Moncrief-Dinsmore @ 9 Mile
University @ Arlington - either 2013 or 2014
Dillon Rd. @ McGirts - replace 2016
Highway Ave. @ Tributary of Cedar Creek
Kings Rd. @ Hopkins (Beach)
Liberty St. @ Coast Line Dr. - engineering for replacement in 2015, but construction not scheduled.  If this is next to the Berkman garage, I saw on the news the other night that the City is trying to get Berkman or their contractor to pay for when a contractor's crane broke through the pavement
Howell Dr. @ Ribault R. - replace 2018
Jones Rd. @ 6 Mile Creek - replace this year
Bessent Rd. @ West Branch Creek - replace 2016
5th St. @ Six Mile Creek
Broad St. @ Hogan's
Trout River Blvd. @ 9 Mile Creek
Magnolia St. @ Longbranch Creek

It'll be interesting to see if they do the University @ Arlington bridge when it's scheduled.  It was supposed to be worked on years ago...but very little happened.
Thanks for the great update!

Some of those remarks are a little stronger than the engineer's cost to repair.  For example, the mainstreet bridge, "Bridge is scour critical; bridge foundations determined to be unstable." sounds a little light at $100k.

Just a couple of editorial notes here, the wooden bridges highlighted in red are not structurally deficient due solely on the basis of their wooden construction.  There are in FACT a number of new studies from all around the country suggesting a move back to more wooden bridge construction for short spans and lightly traveled routes. This comes as no surprise to anyone who has ever worked around the railroad.

Also, Yes Charles and TUFSU1 there are actually many more bridges 'on the list' but for the purposes of the article I set a low score threshold and a 'deficiency' rule and counted the spans that fell below this artificial number. Much above this threshold and the number of bridges would make for a week of reading.

The fact that bridge scour is critical in the largest spans is more concerning to me than any structural issues.  Nothing was mentioned on tidal scour impacts, or if its just part of the overall critical report.

Typically when scour impacts the foundation of a span, there usually isn't any warning or notification until a load presents itself. The span usually fails instantly.

When the Milwaukee Road Olympian crossed Custer Creek in 1938, the bridge was scour compromised, the span collapsed so quickly the engineer was found days later dead, still holding the throttle of his 4-8-4. He hadn't even had a chance to pull the brake lever.

I agree, SCOUR is deadly dangerous and in our black water rivers and the swift currents in town, along with bridges on river bends, we are sitting ducks for this type of collapse. It would read a lot better if we were seeing the pier/bent condition where it meets the river bottom.

...PS, I just glad the HI didn't take that dive when I was on it!  ;)

Hope the Mathews holds up for a little while longer. I drive that one every day. University Blvd doesnt look good either. Hope that one survives until its replaced. Drive that one every weekend.
