Kickstarter campaign for One Spark 2013 underway

I just got back from ArtPrize this Monday - it was great. While parts of it seemed underwhelming (more passive engagement with art, etc.), the majority of the city was buzzing compared to their norm. We had a number of discussions with locals, business owners, artists, and staff from the ArtPrize team regarding the impact to the community. It was, simply put, huge. Museums and galleries double attendance numbers - allowing them to get more grant money each year. Public transport figures skyrocket. The hotels are booked solid. The businesses gain. All in all - it's a big economic engine (as we knew) even though that's not the primary focus.

I've backed this. I feel this could be HUGE for Jacksonville. If it takes off I could see it putting Jacksonville on the map for large yearly events like SXSW in Austin, or ArtPrize in Grand Rapids or even Art Basil in Miami.

My fingers are crossed that they raise enough through Kickstarter.

All -

We're fast closing in on the end of One Spark's Kickstarter campaign. This event, which will bring creators, artists, innovators and entrepreneurs to downtown in April 2013, has the potential to transform the Jacksonville mindset.

Consider becoming a part of this historic event. We're near 80 percent of our fundraising goal with only three days left. You can be part of the Kickstarter campaign by visiting http://beonespark.com/Kickstarter

You definitely can.  It will continue to run for the allotted time (which at this point is approximately 22 hours).

From the Daily Record:

Volunteers needed for One Spark
One Spark, the world’s first crowdfunding festival scheduled April 17-21 at myriad locations Downtown, has closed registration for creators and host venues, but still needs volunteers.

The next step for the inaugural event’s organizers is to recruit a small army of volunteers who will help make One Spark a success.

An open house for prospective volunteers is scheduled 5:30 p.m. Thursday in One Spark’s headquarters at the Main Library near the Laura Street entrance.

“It’s the first year for One Spark, so we need a lot of support from the community,” said Volunteer Services Manager Meredith O’Malley Johnson.

She said the process of registering more than 100 exhibitors and matching them with more than 60 Downtown venues was completed Monday.

The next step is to develop a team of volunteers who will assist with tasks such as setting up, maintaining the event’s infrastructure and assisting “Media Moguls,” photographers and videographers who will document the festival.

Volunteers also will be needed to assist the public in voting for the creators who will receive a proportional share of One Spark’s $250,000 cash-award pool, which is based on fan votes.

Johnson said One Spark volunteer qualifications include being at least 18 years of age and having enthusiasm about Jacksonville, especially Downtown. Volunteers must complete a one-hour training session and work at least one four-hour shift during the festival.

Volunteers will be organized through a “self-scheduling” platform that will allow each volunteer to select the shift or shifts they want to work and what they’d like to do, she said.

Johnson said as of Tuesday afternoon, about 85 potential volunteers had joined the first orientation session Thursday via Facebook.
