That's a really cool idea. I assume this does not apply to parking garages or surface parking lots - though it would be amazing to see one of those turned into a massive park.

Any idea if this is going to be coordinated with food trucks and/or live entertainment? I'd imagine the latter would probably be a possibility.

Very clever!  Sounds like a lot of fun--and makes people appreciate other people and the environment!

Metered parking spaces only.

Food trucks are not part of the equation (and are not allowed on City Right of Way regardless).  In fact, there is a much larger goal in regards to Jacksonville's Park(ing) Day and it has to do with downtown restaurants.

People can play music if that is their choosing.  Their will be no electricity provided, however.

Design guidelines (represented on the flyer in the article) were kept to a minimum to encourage you to use your creativity!

You can google image 'park(ing) day' to get some ideas.

We are going to followup this event with another art-inspired parking event through the MOCA Contemporaries in October.

Wouldn't it have been better to do this on a Saturday?  I'm sure the event will be cool to see, but unless you work downtown the event is rather inaccessible.

Park(ing) Day is an international event that Jacksonville is participating in.  The event is celebrated worldwide on Sept 21st.

I like this idea conceptually, but it has more impact in a city where taking over parking spaces to create a 'park' occurs in a dense area that lacks open space.  In downtown Jacksonville, where there are more empty lots than built ones and parking spaces can go for days without being filled, I suspect it won't quite convey the same ideas.

But it should be pretty cool as public art.

Will there be a map posted the day before showing us where the parks will be located?

Depends on how many people participate.

You and Laura should do a co-working park downtown for the day :)

It just goes to show there is a "national" day for most everything.

JACKSONVILLE AD AGENCY TO PARTICIPATE IN PARK(ING) DAY

JACKSONVILLE, FL (SEPTEMBER 14, 2012):

Downtown based Mad Men Marketing Inc. will be participating in this year’s National Park(ing) Day.  They will convert a metered parking space in front of their 111 E. Bay Street location into a living room area in order to play a DVD series marathon of the AMC Drama Mad Men, and invite the passing public to take a seat and enjoy.

President, JD Blair says, “We are excited to take part in this national movement to transform regular parking spots, even if only for one day, into public spaces, so that anyone can come by and relax in a formerly hectic environment, for free.”

Park(ing) Day will be represented in Downtown Jacksonville on Friday, September 21st from 10am - 5pm.
