The map boundaries are shown as McCoys Creek (south), Jefferson (east), Beaver (north) and Myrtle (west).

Your Odds of Being a Victim

Why neighborhoods and not cities? Even the cities with the highest crime rates can have relatively safe neighborhoods, and thus it is less useful to generalize about an entire city. But using exclusive data developed by Dr. Schiller at NeighborhoodScout.com, and based on FBI data from all 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, our gallery counts down the 25 neighborhoods with the highest predicted rates of violent crime in America.

Not surprised that a neighborhood in Jax made the list, but I didn't think that it would be LaVilla.

Statistics seem to be skewed by population. 47 crimes and #4 on list that could easily be a one year statistical anomaly. Not to say that this is the safest of neighborhoods, just that this may not be the best comparison with other areas.

Well the comparison is  adjusted per 1000 people so yes it is in fact skewed by population.  Its not a list of total crimes but crimes per 1000 people.  Sure the amount of crimes say in Mandarin or in other westside areas may be higher, but since the population is higher they don't make the list. Its called statistics

Right, I probably didn't word it properly. My point is that with a small sample population as compared with the rest of the neighborhoods on the list, that this could be a one year anomaly. With statistics the smaller the sample the larger the margin of error. I agree with the other poster at not being shocked that a Jacksonville neighborhood was on the list, just didn't expect it to be LaVilla. Maybe 103rd, Brentwood or Arlington.

Strangely missing from this list is Los Angeles (and Southern California) and the Texas border towns. Their absence, and the first hand knowledge of the violent crime which goes on there (aka drug and gang warfare) makes the accuracy of the list dubious.

Again I think the point is that its related to the relative population.  Both LA and the border towns have a very high density, whereas lavilla is a ghost town in comparison

Know how many people LIVE in the area bounded by McCoy's (I assume this is the FEC railroad area by the Convention Center), Myrtle, Beaver, and Jefferson?  I count about 20 surviving houses at best.  How can anyone call this statistically valid?  It undermines the whole point of the listing.  My guess is most crimes in this area, if there really are any of significance, are business burglaries or crimes upon the homeless or shelter users which have been attributed to the few residents inhabiting this zone creating a ridiculous ratio.

Here is the aerial photo.  Subtract the houses facing Myrtle near Church St.  They were condemned and have been demolished.

^You're right.  A number of houses have also been condemned and demolished on W Duval Street. My guess is the majority of people sleeping anywhere in this section of town are in homeless shelters.

My guess is that business burglaries probably aren't considered "violent crimes".

I'm really shocked that anything along O.B.T. in Orlando area isn't higher on the list. Maybe because it's too well known for violence that more people steer clear of it.

Really though, LaVilla???  Oh wait, I know... because there really isn't a huge populace in this area, so any crime occurring here would rate higher than elsewhere.

WJXT is doing a special on at 6 and 10 this Thursday on the dangerous parts of Jax. Should be interesting to see if they find the same results.
