Welcome!! Do you have anymore info you want to share? We are quite a mix here and can maybe help point you to some places with similar interests where you can meet people.

G'Day!! What brought you to mingle with the Yanks? You don't have a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock do you? Say, there's a little peice of Ozzie that kicks off in the late spring. You a footy fan? If so you'll be stoked to know Jax has an ace footy team called the Axemen. Should have you happy as Larry if you don't know about them already. http://www.metrojacksonville.com/forum/index.php/topic,4719.0.html

oh my god I have totally not come back to check on this thread. My bad people, and you're so nice here - so I apologize! To answer your questions that you were so kind to ask, I came here with my other half because we wanted to see what it's like to live on the other side of the world, and because his family live here it seemed like a good place to start. I have so many good thing to say about Jax: people here are indeed strange and off center, and what I like best is that they are mostly themselves and don't try too hard to be something else. Not pretentious in other words, and it's so refreshing after Sydney. I love the art scene here, how it feels so down home and inviting instead of totally intimidating. No I am definitely not a footy fan (but I do make fun of my other half when he watches college football by calling it footy - he hates it), but thanks for that link Jason Anyway I hope you forgive me for replying a month late...I'll try not to be flaky like that.

No worries - glad to hear you've been out and about discovering our eccentricities! Be extra careful this time of year if you're out shopping, and aware of your surroundings, etc.

JASON are you crazy? First off hello spyralsgirl and welcome to our newest from the old Hippie OCKLAWAHA. As an expatriot myself, I certainly salute y'all on making the leap to come here. If you will forgive me, we have some unfinished house cleaning to tend to.
JASON! WHO ARE YOU CALLING A YANKEE? I realize most folks from the great beyond call all Americans Yankee or Yank, but the quicker we educate them the better. Calling ANYONE in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma or southern Arizona and New Mexico (Confederate Arizona) is enough to get one shot! In other places it can get you a black and blue whipping you won't soon forget. Anyone thinking this is safe behavior, consider that just a couple of years ago, I was talking with a group of reenactors from the Olustee Battlefield. The Federal boys told us that they left for home in uniform ONCE, and they wouldn't do that again. Somewhere where they stopped for food the restaurant refused to serve them, and some kids threw rocks at them while the parents sat on the porch and watched! Jacksonville might be a lot of things, but it is SOUTH, deep SOUTH, FORGET HELL SOUTH!
Thank y'all for your time and consideration on this matter. You have to ask yourself a question before calling OCKLAWAHA a Yankee, he's licenced, so is he carrying? I don't know punk, do you feel lucky? Hee Hee!OCKLAWAHA

ah thanks Ocklawaha, I sure hope Jason learns something. And Jason, I do forgive you for the lame Australian speak. you know before we leave Australia, we get warned to not be surprised if people think we have kangaroos in our, um, back paddocks.

Hi "Spy," welcome to America!
So spyralsgirl, your husband is American huh? Is this your first time in America? From your speak obviously not. I had the pleasure, whilst I was in the Navy of visiting Perth, Australia in 1980. Beautiful, clean and pristine city (back then); hope it's still that way. The Aussies were very nice, friendly, accomodating, and invited us into their homes; I'll never forget the "Aussie Hospitality!" Hope you enjoy Jax; quite a change from a huge city like Sydney. Welcome to your second home. At least we speak english! (I think, and hopefully for a few more years unless we're invaded)
