KIDS EAT, TO CROSS A RIVER COSTS MONEY, just look at how many times taxpayers have paid to fix and paint the mathews bridge and the estimated expense of building a new one. Or just a smaller example, how much does it cost to maintain and keep a bridge tender (whatever the person is called who raises the bridge) where people who live in ortega cross on ortega blvd?

Why isn't there a comparison of what it normally cost to maintain a bridge and what the ferry costs,(after income) then its probably a bargain

I totally agree. No road or bridge in Jacksonville pays its own way. To use this excuse is absurd. To call the ferry a tourist attraction is absurd. And to me, these statements indicate one of two things.

1. Those who advised the governor to make the cuts are totally out of touch with the area and the reality of the necessity of the ferry. And then I ask, how could the people in positions with so much authority be so... uneducated... in this issue?

2. They were the only things that could be thought of to say about it if indeed some of the local suspicions are true that what we seem to watch unfold in the moment were in reality planned some time ago.

Sounds a lot like the arguments rail and skyway backers continue to make to the general population here in town.  As for constructing a new bridge, the Matthews replacement was estimated to cost around $800 million a few years ago.  If a vehicular crossing was the goal at Mayport, it would have to be a tunnel (probably costs more) instead of a bridge.
