Southern Grounds coming...have we hit Peak coffee yet!?!
« on: July 17, 2017, 09:54:39 AM »
We love our weekend getaways at One Ocean and hit Southern Grounds hard while we are there. The San Marco coffee options are getting out of control......and I think I like it!

Maybe people will finally wake up and smell the (better) coffee and stop spending a not immaterial portion of their income on Starbucks?

Speaking of new coffee shops, has anyone tried Coniferous downtown on Monroe St across from the library?

Awesome! I mean that very genuinely, but I guess that also means there's little hope for the coffee shop announced at the Laundry Station on San Marco Blvd almost a year ago. We've got Starbucks, Bold Bean, Good Dough Donuts, Panera and now this place all concentrated on the central/Eastern side of San Marco.

I don't believe it will have a major impact. The San Marco Boulevard site is right down the street from all the major capital improvements and infill by Baptist Health.  Short of a bust in the economy, there should be enough people around to consume the extra caffeine.

I would always rather support local, but, just for example, Bold Bean's coffee, which I have found is representative of all "artisan" coffee or whatever the hell, is very acidic and bitter and just has a bad taste.  When it comes to straight coffee, and not those BS frou frou drinks, I'll take Starbucks every day.

Damn. Sick burn right there.

Actually I know what tastes good and what I like.  And if that sets me apart from the dorkuses who take coffee super seriously, then that's a plus in my book.

Drinking coffee that is outrageously expensive just because it's hip, is really lame.  Drink what you like and let the wannabes blow their bread on all the b/s frou frou concoctions.  I judge coffee for the taste of the coffee, not some swill with mint, mocha, pumpkin spice, whipped cream, peppermint, cinnamon, honey swirl, Shirley Temple bubblegum crap in it.  People who like that kind of coffee, know absolutely nothing about coffee.

I've found Bold Bean (which I happen to like despite the bitterness) to be the exception, not the rule. I would bet that controlling for mere-exposure bias, in a double-blind test, most people would prefer the black coffee served at local shops to Pike Place or whatever Starbucks serves now.

I remember laughing when I read this a decade ago: https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/a-bitter-shot-for-starbucks-mcdonalds-wins-taste-test/ and I agree with the review of Starbucks coffee: "Strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open”
